Gardens of Museu da República (Palácio do Catete)

A historic garden for a break and a visit to the former presidential palace

The gardens of Museu da República form a large green space in the heart of Catete, with trees, a lake, paths, sculptures and resting areas beside the former Palácio do Catete.

History and context

Before you go, I want to tell you why it is worth it

Palácio do Catete housed the Presidency of the Republic when Rio de Janeiro was the federal capital. After the capital moved to Brasília in 1960, the complex became home to Museu da República. Its historic gardens remain open for socialising, strolling and relaxing.

The experience

What you will experience here

It is especially enjoyable for families because it combines history and time outdoors: you can explore the museum, then slow down among the trees, paths and garden lake.

👀 What you will find

Historic palace, museum, large trees, lake, paths, sculptures and shared social spaces.

❤️ Ideal for

Families, older adults, travellers interested in history and anyone looking for a peaceful, free outing in Zona Sul.

🗺️ Combine it with

Museu da República, Largo do Machado, Aterro do Flamengo and Parque do Flamengo.

✨ Do not leave without...

Palácio do Catete seen from the garden, large trees, the lake, paths, sculptures and a visit to the historic rooms of Museu da República.

🎒 Before you go

The garden and museum have separate opening hours. If you want to visit both, check the museum’s hours before setting off. Bring insect repellent during mosquito season and supervise children near the lake.

🧭 How I would do it

My plan: the museum first, then the gardens, followed by a walk around Catete or Largo do Machado for something to eat. It also combines very well with Flamengo and Aterro do Flamengo.

Ernestinho’s tip

Do more than take a photo of the palace. Go inside, learn its history and leave time for the gardens. With children, that outdoor break completely changes the visit.

⭐ Highlights

A historic green space that is easy to reach by metro and ideal for alternating culture with outdoor relaxation.
