A huge park facing the bay for walking, cycling, playing and picnics
Parque do Flamengo, officially Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes and widely known as Aterro do Flamengo, is one of Rio’s major green spaces. It connects Glória and Flamengo with gardens, cycle paths, sports areas and open views of Guanabara Bay.
History and context
Before you go, I want to tell you why it is worth it
It was conceived during the urban transformations of the early 1960s. Lota de Macedo Soares led the project, with landscape design by Roberto Burle Marx and his team, creating one of the city’s great works of modern landscape architecture.

It is a huge park and facilities are not concentrated in one place. Bring water and sunscreen, and decide which area to visit beforehand. Avoid isolated areas at night.

My plan: MAM and its gardens, a walk towards Marina da Glória, then time in the park or a picnic. By bike, you can explore a larger section without tiring the whole family.

With children, choose one area and enjoy it without turning the park into an endless walk. Enjoying one section properly is much better than trying to see it all.
