BioParque do Rio
A family experience to discover animal life
Rio’s former zoo was transformed into a biopark focused on conservation, research, environmental education and animal welfare.
Before you go, I want to tell you why it is worth it
The original zoo opened in 1945 inside Quinta da Boa Vista. Following a major transformation, it reopened as BioParque with new enclosures and a modern approach.

BioParque do Rio: a family visit that also teaches you to observe
If you come to Rio with children or teenagers, I suggest visiting BioParque with two aims: enjoying the outing and leaving with a question about animals and our place in their stories. I don’t want us to race around every enclosure. I prefer choosing a few, reading their signs and leaving time to rest. This complete guide is in Family, because that section plans the visit around a family group’s pace; Attractions links directly to it.
BioParque is within Quinta da Boa Vista in São Cristóvão. Today’s zoological park occupies a landscape with a history predating the zoo: Quinta was connected with a colonial estate, the royal and later imperial residence, and Rio’s cultural life. You can therefore connect your visit with the gardens, palace and Museu Nacional, provided their access and conditions are current. We should not confuse Quinta’s history with the zoo’s: these are different layers of the same territory.
From the old zoo to BioParque
Rio’s zoo was founded in 1888 elsewhere and moved to Quinta da Boa Vista in 1945. Decades later, the project underwent concession and renewal processes. BioParque opened to the public in 2021 after remodelling that changed spaces, enclosures and the visitor concept. At reopening, the city government described around 60,000 m² of visitor area; communications from other years publish different animal and species counts. Those quantities change and should appear in a dated panel if useful; I won’t present them as a permanent inventory.
BioParque’s approach brings together animal welfare, education, conservation and research. I would look for concrete examples on panels and in educational programming: which issue each project addresses, which team participates and what results the park communicates. That way the visit also becomes an opportunity to learn.
What ‘biopark’ means and what we can learn
The word can start a conversation, but does not answer everything on its own. A modern zoological institution’s work may include veterinary management, welfare, environmental enrichment, education, research and collaboration with conservation projects. That does not mean every visible animal belongs to a reintroduction programme or that a visit alone directly helps save a specific species. I prefer the guide to ask questions and cite evidence.
When reading a sign, look for these clues: where the species lives in nature; threats it faces; how it feeds; behaviour you can observe; what the park says about the individual and enclosure; and which programme, if any, is documented. If an answer is missing, we won’t invent one. Animals are not performers on stage either: they may rest, hide or be active at another time. No sighting should be guaranteed.
Animal welfare cannot be assessed solely by clean glass or an enclosure looking large in a photo. It requires specialist criteria, context and transparency. This guide can explain what the operator communicates about management, veterinary care and environmental enrichment, distinguishing it from what a family can conclude during a short visit.

Organise the visit around your family
The official page recommends booking and publishes hours that can change with seasons, holidays or events. At the time of this check, BioParque’s channel lists regular opening Wednesday to Sunday, 9am–5pm, with last admission at 4pm; confirm your exact day before leaving, since special periods have used other hours. The route duration given for school visits is an educational reference rather than a mandatory length for a family visit.
Before going, check the official website for:
- day, hours and last admission;
- ticket type, capacity and rescheduling policy;
- educational programming or special activities actually running that day;
- rules for food, strollers, bags, pets and photography;
- accessibility, toilets, changing facilities, rest areas and food options;
- parking availability and arrival by public transport.
Inside the park, choose two or three areas that interest your group and use the official map. Take breaks and give children a question to observe: which part of the enclosure does the animal use most? How are water and shade distributed? What behaviour appears when there is less noise? Avoid tapping on glass, feeding animals, shouting for their attention or taking the group off permitted paths.
On a hot day, alternate open sections with shaded breaks and water. If it rains, check whether the park remains open and which areas or activities have changed; don’t assume the entire route is covered. For people with reduced mobility, consult the operator’s current information about surfaces, slopes, support and access, because ‘accessible park’ does not describe every route or experience.

Getting to Quinta da Boa Vista
The official address is Parque da Quinta da Boa Vista in São Cristóvão. The operator lists public transport options and São Cristóvão metro/train station as a nearby reference; check current routes and access from your accommodation. Quinta is extensive, so distances between the station, entrances and admission point matter with small children, a stroller or someone who finds walking difficult. Allow time to reach the correct gate from the station.
If you also want to explore the gardens, check the state of Quinta’s public areas and plan a food or rest break. The zoo visit and a walk through Quinta do not share the same admission or necessarily the same hours. Museu Nacional, within the complex, should only be included if open to the public with programming confirmed on its official page.

My tip for visiting with children
I would let each child choose an animal or area to explore more closely instead of promising ‘we’ll see everything’. I would bring water, sun protection, comfortable clothes and a power bank if the map is on my phone. I would take a break before tiredness turns into rushing. With mixed ages, I would agree on an easy meeting point and keep younger children close at crossings and busy areas.
I would also discuss respect before entering: animals are not characters to call over or touch, and the people working there are not exhibits either. The visit can be fun without making every moment a selfie. If an animal is not visible, use the opportunity to read, observe the surroundings or discuss why an enclosure needs refuge spaces.
Boat rides and additional activities
The park has offered a boat ride in the African Savannah, documented in its programming and services. I would treat it as an additional option: ask whether it operates on your date, which ticket includes it, conditions for children and the cost before promising it to your family. The photograph does not guarantee current operation.

BioParque and Ernestinho’s offer
The complete guide stays in Family and is useful even if you go independently. For help with logistics, see my BioParque Experience page and confirm whether the current offer includes admission, transfers and accompaniment, and its departure area. I won’t publish a fixed price unless the operator or my current page confirms it. The sales page makes booking easier; this guide explains the place and how to enjoy it.
Frequently asked questions
Is BioParque Rio’s old zoo? It occupies the historic Quinta da Boa Vista zoo site and opened as BioParque in 2021 after remodelling. The zoological institution has a longer history than the current brand.
How long does the visit take? It depends on ages, breaks, pace and the day’s activities. Use the map and choose a flexible route; you don’t need to see everything.
Which animals will I see? The collection and activity change; animals may rest or remain out of sight. Check current park information and don’t expect guaranteed sightings.
Can I combine it with Quinta da Boa Vista? Yes, you can plan a walk in the surroundings, but check which areas are open, the time needed and access rules.
Is it open every day? Hours may change. The official page consulted lists regular opening Wednesday to Sunday, 9am–5pm, with last admission at 4pm; confirm before going.
