Stations and branches
The network connects 12 municipalities and has five branches—Santa Cruz, Deodoro, Japeri, Belford Roxo and Saracuruna—as well as extensions to Paracambi, Vila Inhomirim and Guapimirim. The official map shows stations, destinations and connections. Check the branch, final destination and platform, as trains leaving the same station may follow different routes.
The rail station Central and the Metro’s Central station are connected downtown, but they are separate systems and may have different fares and payment rules. Allow time to walk between them. For events at Maracanã, check which station is best and whether special service is operating.
Cards, fares and service
SuperVia lists a fare of R$7.60 and an integrated fare of R$5.00 for eligible BUI users. It also lists single tickets, RioCard/Fetranspor cards and contactless payment at enabled stations. Check what works at your station. Do not assume Jaé is accepted; check SuperVia before reaching the gates, as prices may change.
Check for maintenance, frequency changes and disruptions on the day. If service is interrupted, do not leave the station without a clear alternative; ask staff about the official transfer or replacement service.
Practical use and safety
Save the names of your departure and arrival stations and follow platform signs. Check the stops before boarding an express or branch service. Keep your belongings with you and avoid using your phone by open doors or on crowded platforms.
Before returning, check service and the time of the last train you need. At night, consider the distance from the station to your final destination; you can take a taxi or rideshare for the remaining leg from a busy location.
The trains I consider useful for visitors
You do not need to memorize the whole network. I first think of Central do Brasil as a starting point; Maracanã and São Cristóvão for events and connections; Madureira to discover another side of Rio; then I consider the metropolitan branches if my destination is truly outside the traditional tourist circuit.
The network has five main branches — Deodoro, Santa Cruz, Japeri, Belford Roxo and Saracuruna — plus extensions. The destination displayed on the train matters: they do not all follow the same route.
Fares and payment in 2026
In 2026, SuperVia maintains its published fare of R$ 7,60. Customers with an enabled BUI continue to pay R$ 5,00 under the relevant conditions. The company sells single-journey cards and lists QR code sales at Central do Brasil to open the turnstile; that QR code cannot be used to board at other stations.
Riocard Mais is accepted at certain stations, and SuperVia warns that the system may be unavailable. I would confirm payment at the return station, not just at Central.
⚠️ The last train time is not the station closing time
SuperVia warns that stations may close before the last train passes. If your return depends on a nighttime departure, check the specific station guide and do not plan your arrival solely around the last service time.
⭐ Ernestinho’s tip
For Maracanã, Madureira or a North Zone destination, the train can make much more sense than crossing Rio by car. But I always check the day's operations and my return before setting out. Major events may bring special services and platform changes.
SuperVia FAQs
Is SuperVia the metro?
No. It is the metropolitan rail network, with its own operations, branches and fare.
How much does it cost in 2026?
The published fare remains R$ 7,60; specific conditions apply to users with an enabled BUI.
Can I buy a QR code at Central?
SuperVia lists QR code sales at Central do Brasil to open the turnstile. That code cannot be used to board at other stations.
Can I use it to reach Maracanã?
Yes, the network serves Maracanã and São Cristóvão. On match or event days, I would check special operations before setting out.
What should I do if the service changes?
Check official notices and ask staff about the recommended service or transfer; do not improvise an alternative branch without confirming it.
