GETTING AROUND RIO · ERNESTINHO’S GUIDE

Rio de Janeiro Metro

The backbone for travelling around the South Zone, Downtown and parts of the North Zone without relying on road traffic.

When people ask how to get around Rio, I usually start by checking where their accommodation and the stations are. The Metro is easy to navigate in the main tourist areas; its biggest advantage is connecting neighbourhoods quickly and clearly.

When I recommend the Metro

I recommend it for connecting Copacabana, Ipanema, Botafogo, Flamengo and Downtown, as well as reaching Maracanã or continuing to Barra via the BRT connection at Jardim Oceânico. Before leaving, check your boarding station and final station: the direction is identified by the line’s destination, not just its colour.

Lines share sections and some stations allow transfers. Check the official map and current route before walking to a station; a route that looks nearby may require a different connection. Consider the final leg after the Metro too, including whether the walk will feel comfortable at your return time.

How to pay and what to check

The published Metro fare for 2026 is R$7.90 per trip. MetrôRio lists payment methods, sales locations and transfer rules; check its page on the day, as fares and accepted methods may change. Do not assume a card balance or benefit automatically works with another operator.

Buy or top up your payment method before the gates, make sure it was accepted and keep the receipt in case you need to resolve an issue. Metro–BRT transfer rules depend on the connection point and payment system; check the official transfer information.

How I plan a journey

Open the operator’s map, locate your origin and destination, and check whether you need to change lines. Note the station name and the train’s final destination. Allow extra time when travelling to Maracanã on match day or Downtown during an event, and check that day’s service notices.

Stations and trains can be crowded at peak times. Let passengers off before boarding, keep your bag closed and stand clear of the doors. Follow signs and staff announcements; if a connection is disrupted, ask for guidance before making a long detour above ground.

Accessibility, luggage and getting back

Elevators, escalators and available entrances vary by station and construction work. If you use a wheelchair or stroller, or have limited mobility, check the specific station and its status with MetrôRio before travelling. With large suitcases, also consider crowding and the final walk.

Before travelling, check the last service that works for you and how you will get from the station to your accommodation. If returning late, carrying luggage or facing a poorly lit final walk, consider combining the Metro with a rideshare or taxi for the last leg.

MAKING SENSE OF THE LINES

How I read Rio's metro network

Line 1: runs through Tijuca, Centro and the South Zone. For a visitor, it is useful for stations in Centro, Flamengo and Botafogo, and connections towards Copacabana.

Line 2: connects Pavuna and the North Zone; in regular service it reaches Botafogo. It is essential for Maracanã, São Cristóvão and various North Zone journeys.

Line 4: extends the South Zone route from General Osório to Nossa Senhora da Paz, Jardim de Alah, Antero de Quental, São Conrado and Jardim Oceânico. Jardim Oceânico is also a key BRT connection for Barra and Recreio.

The official service information currently states that Line 1/4 trains run between Uruguai/Tijuca and Jardim Oceânico/Barra, while Line 2 runs between Pavuna and Botafogo. On weekends, public holidays and special-service days, I always check the official channel again because transfers can change.

How to pay: the simplest option for a visitor

The public fare currently published by MetrôRio is R$ 7,90. If you are only making a few journeys, I would start by checking contactless payment or a single ticket before buying a dedicated card. MetrôRio also offers Giro and prepaid options; Giro has its own purchase, top-up and balance-protection rules.

If you are paying contactless, hold only the payment method you want to use near the turnstile: avoid tapping a wallet full of cards, as you could accidentally use a different one. If payment fails, do not keep trying repeatedly: check with your bank that contactless is enabled and use another available method.

⭐ Ernestinho’s tip

When I accompany someone using the metro for the first time, I tell them not to memorize the whole network. Look at your station, the final destination indicating the direction, and where to get off. With those three things, you can already manage most tourist journeys. If you are going to a match, concert or New Year's Eve celebration, do not automatically rely on normal-day hours: check the special service first.

Opening hours to keep in mind

MetrôRio lists the usual opening hours of lines 1, 2 and 4, Monday to Saturday, as 05:00 a 00:00, and on Sundays and public holidays from 07:00 a 23:00. The operator itself warns that these hours may change because of external factors or special services. To make a connection between lines, you must reach the transfer platform before service closes.
