GETTING AROUND RIO · ERNESTINHO’S GUIDE

Uber and rideshare apps

Useful for trips with luggage, late-night journeys or places not served nearby by public transport.

I compare price and journey time in the app before deciding. Uber and other rideshare services can help with the last leg, an arrival with luggage or travel at times when public transport is less convenient. The pickup point matters as much as the destination.

🚕 Prices vary · confirm the driver, vehicle and pickup point in the app
Uber and ride-hailing apps in Rio de Janeiro
Uber and apps: always confirm the vehicle, driver and meeting point on your phone.

Requesting a ride to the right destination

Confirm the address, building entrance or hotel door, and choose the ride type shown in your app. At places with several entrances, add a clear note and make sure the driver understands the pickup point. At airports, stadiums and major events, use the designated pickup zone, which may not be by the nearest door.

Price and estimated time vary with demand, traffic and ride type. Check both before confirming and keep the receipt in the app. Do not accept an off-app ride as if it were the trip you requested.

Using Uber and mobility apps in Rio
Before getting in, I compare the license plate, model and driver with the app information.

Checking the car and driver

Before getting in, compare the licence plate, make, colour and driver identity with the app. If anything does not match, do not get in; cancel and request another ride. For extra safety, share your trip with someone you trust and use the app’s support tools.

If travelling in a group, make sure everyone and their luggage fit in the selected vehicle, with a seat belt for each person. Large suitcases may require a different category. Always wear a seat belt and never ask the driver to make an unsafe stop or manoeuvre.

At airports and events, the correct pickup point may change according to local operations.

Airports and event areas

At GIG and SDU, pickup points depend on signs, terminal and airport operations. Follow directions in the app and official notices. Do not rely on old instructions from other people, as pickup zones may change.

Around Maracanã, the Sambadrome and concerts, streets may be closed and pickup zones may be far away. Choose an easy-to-find meeting point without blocking traffic. If fares surge, compare the Metro, VLT or BRT and complete the final leg safely.

Ride-hailing and urban transport in Rio
For me, the app complements the metro, VLT and BRT when the route, time or luggage justifies it.

When I choose another option

For direct trips through the South Zone or Downtown, the Metro may be more predictable during rush hour. The VLT serves several connections in the Port Zone; BRT can be practical for Barra and parts of the West Zone. Compare door-to-door time, not just time in the car.

At night, or when travelling with older adults, children or luggage, choose a well-lit, busy pickup point. The app offers safety tools to share a trip, check vehicle details, request help and call 190 through its safety centre; Uber says calls in Rio may share data and location with emergency services. If a PIN check is available, use it to confirm the ride. If you lose signal or the driver does not arrive, contact support and never share the code with anyone else.

BEFORE YOU BOARD

My rule for avoiding the wrong ride

I do not get in just because the car says “Uber”. I compare on my phone the driver's name and photo, vehicle model and license plate. If any of those details do not match, I do not get in. If U-Código/PIN is enabled, give the code only to the correct driver after checking the vehicle.

I also decline offers to “do it cheaper outside the app”. Leaving the platform means losing some of the tracking and support tools associated with the requested ride.

UberX, Comfort, Black and luggage

Available categories depend on location, time and supply. I do not choose solely by price: with several bags or a group, I check capacity before confirming. A category available in your app does not guarantee comfortable space for any amount of luggage.

At airports and events, check the pickup point indicated in the app. Walking to an “easier” spot without saying so can leave the driver and passenger on different streets.

⚠️ Take extra care with cash payments

If you selected cash in the app, on arrival I check the displayed amount and whether the trip has actually ended. I would not hand over extra cash for tolls, extras or an improvised second payment: Uber says you should only pay cash when that was the method selected in the app.

If the driver asks for cash even though your trip has an electronic payment method selected, do not settle it outside the platform: use app support. If you will pay cash, carrying change avoids problems.

⭐ Ernestinho’s tip

In Rio, especially when leaving an airport, terminal, stadium or party, do not show your screen to just anyone asking whether they are your Uber. Check the license plate yourself and let the driver confirm the trip details. If something does not match, stay somewhere safe and request another ride.

Uber, 99 and other apps: how I use them

Having more than one app can help compare waiting time, category and price. But I never decide just to save a few reais: I also check the meeting point, time, luggage and how easily I can identify the vehicle. Prices can vary with demand and traffic.

If the driver asks you to cancel and continue outside the app, I would not do it. If you need to cancel, do so in the app and check any possible fee through support.

FAQs I would save before traveling

What should I check before getting in?

The driver's photo and name, license plate, vehicle model and the active trip on your phone. Use U-Código/PIN if enabled.

Do I need to pay cash if I selected a card?

No. Uber says cash should only be handed over when it was the payment method selected for the trip.

What if the driver asks me to cancel and continue outside the app?

Do not continue as though it were the ride you requested. Keep the trip within the platform and use support if there is a problem.

How can I improve my safety at night?

Wait somewhere well lit, check the car before leaving your safe spot, share the trip and wear a seat belt even in the back seat.

Is it useful for events?

It can be useful, but closures and demand may move the pickup point farther away and raise the price. I compare the metro, BRT or VLT before deciding.

Sources and useful links

Before setting out, I check fares and service updates with the operator. Prices, schedules and payment methods may change.
