GETTING AROUND RIO · ERNESTINHO’S GUIDE

Buses in Rio: how to use them

The widest network for getting between neighbourhoods and filling gaps not covered by the Metro or VLT.

Buses reach many neighbourhoods, but visitors need to choose the right route number and direction. I recommend planning each trip with the exact address, checking the route in an app and confirming the destination shown on the bus before boarding.

How to read and choose a route

Enter the exact destination and starting point; a bus route may have variations and run in different directions. Check the number, final destination and current itinerary in the city’s journey planner. Construction, traffic, events and network changes can affect routes, so do not rely on an old screenshot alone.

Check the direction and the stop where you need to get off. If you need to transfer, find out where and how far you will walk between stops. If the route is confusing or involves a long walk at night, compare the Metro, VLT, BRT or a rideshare.

Payment on city buses

From May 30, 2026, the city said municipal buses would stop accepting cash on board. Check which methods are available for your trip: Jaé and QR/app payments are listed by the city, while Pix and bank cards were introduced in stages.

For the municipal Bilhete Único Carioca transfer, the city specifies the black Jaé card or the corresponding QR option; a green single-ride card does not qualify. Check current terms, required balance and where to buy or top up. Do not confuse a standard fare with a transfer benefit.

During the ride

Validate your payment method as instructed and keep a digital or printed receipt if applicable. Follow your route on your phone without displaying it by the door. If you need to request a stop, signal the driver in time and get off at the stop you confirmed.

Traffic can delay buses. Allow extra time for transfers and airport trips. For a match or show, check special routes and your return journey; nearby streets and stops may change temporarily.

Safety and comfort

Wait at a busy stop, keep your belongings secure and do not board as the doors are closing. On a crowded bus, wear your backpack in front and keep your phone and wallet out of back pockets. If you use a wheelchair or stroller, or need assistance, check vehicle access and the stop’s conditions.

You do not need to know the whole network to take a bus. For your first trip, choose a direct route or one transfer, save your destination stop and check the return direction before leaving.

How I use buses without getting lost

Buses reach places the metro and VLT do not, but require a little more attention from visitors. I look for the route number and exact destination, check the route on my phone and confirm where to get off before boarding.

I do not settle for “it passes through Copacabana” or “it goes downtown”: the same avenue can have routes going in different directions and on long journeys. Google Maps or a mobility app can help visitors follow the stops, but operations can change.

How to pay with Jaé

Municipal buses are part of the Jaé system. You can pay with an app-generated QR code or a Jaé card. The transport account can be topped up through Pix or a credit card in the app; Jaé also says that account balances do not expire.

If you combine buses, BRT or VLT, fare integration follows the Bilhete Único Carioca rules. I would not assume that every occasional-use card offers the same integration: the standalone Jaézinho stopped participating in municipal fare integrations on May 30, 2026.

⚠️ Your phone and where to get off

I follow the route, but would not travel with my phone exposed the whole time beside an open window or door. Check the map discreetly, put your phone away and check again when needed. If you are unsure about the stop, ask ahead of time.

⭐ Ernestinho’s tip

During the day on a simple route, the bus can be excellent for seeing the city. At night, if the stop is empty, you do not know the neighborhood or you will need a long walk after getting off, I would compare the metro or an app before deciding solely to save money.

Bus FAQs

Can I pay with my phone?

Yes. For compatible municipal transport, Jaé lets you generate a QR code in the app.

How do I know where to get off?

I mark the destination in a map app and follow the route without waiting until the last second. If you are unsure, ask before you arrive.

Can I combine buses with BRT or VLT?

There are integrated fares under the Bilhete Único Carioca rules with Jaé. Check the current conditions for your specific combination.

Is it a good option with luggage?

It depends on the time, crowding and route. With large luggage, children or a nighttime arrival, I would compare the metro or a ride-hailing transfer.

Before setting out, I check fares and service updates with the operator. Prices, schedules and payment methods may change.
