Getting started with the bike-sharing system
Bike Itaú lists its app, available plans, stations and rules on its website. Install or open the official app, select Rio, check the current plan and confirm the price and terms before unlocking a bike. Stations, bike availability and plans may change.
Use the app to find a bike and make sure it unlocks properly before setting off. Return it to an authorized station and wait for the lock confirmation. Check that the trip has ended in the app; a poorly docked bike may remain active.

Choosing a safe route
Check the whole route before setting out: cycle lanes, crossings, hills, construction and return stations. Do not judge by distance alone. If an app suggests narrow streets, highways or sections that do not feel safe, stop and change route or transport mode.
Use cycle lanes where available, obey traffic lights and pedestrians, and slow down near beaches, parks and busy promenades. Use lights and reflective gear if available, and do not cycle while distracted by your phone.

E-bikes and plan terms
The operator may offer standard and electric bikes under different terms or charges. Check the app for the bike type, time limits, excess charges and rules for pausing or ending a ride. I do not list a fixed price because plans vary by type and may change.
Check battery and availability in the app. For an uphill ride, consider the remaining range and confirm your plan allows that type of bike. Do not ride outside the published service area.

My pre-ride checklist
Check the brakes, wheels, seat and lights. Report any problem and choose another bike. Bring water, sun protection and a working payment method. Save the operator’s support number in case you cannot end your ride.
Before taking a bike on the Metro, VLT, train or ferry, check that operator’s rules. Do not assume bikes are allowed at all times or in every carriage. If your plans depend on returning it, identify a nearby alternative station.

📱 How to use Bike Itaú step by step

Bike Itaú says that if you notice a problem immediately, you can return the bike within the period indicated by the system and report the defect. It also warns that a full station means you must find another with an available dock.
Prices, time limits and electric bikes
Plans and prices change, so I would check the plans screen before unlocking. Rio's official page distinguishes mechanical and electric bikes, time limits, included rides and additional charges for exceeding them. Electric bikes may have an extra unlocking fee depending on the plan.
The official website currently lists over 430 stations in Rio and operating hours of 05:00 a 00:00. Even so, check the actual availability of bikes and docks in the app at the time.
🗺️ Routes I recommend
Leblon → Ipanema → Copacabana
It is one of my favorite routes for visitors because it combines the waterfront, scenery and an easy way to understand the city. Always check the current cycle path.
Copacabana → Botafogo → Flamengo
A beautiful way to enjoy the coast, but I would check crossings and connections before setting out, as not every part feels equally straightforward if you do not know Rio.
Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas
One of my choices for a calmer ride and enjoying the scenery around the lagoon.
Ipanema → Leblon → São Conrado
Longer and more demanding. I would not automatically choose it for a first experience: check the weather, your fitness, the cycle path and your return.
⭐ Ernestinho’s tip
To really enjoy cycling in Rio, I try to stay on cycle paths and avoid busy roads when a safer alternative exists. Before unlocking, I also check where I will return the bike: arriving tired to find a full station completely changes the outing.
Bike Itaú FAQs
Do I need to be an Itaú customer?
No. Bike Itaú says the service is available even if you are not a bank customer.
Do I have to return it to the same station?
No. You can finish at another station in the system as long as a dock is available and the bike is properly locked.
How do I know my ride has ended?
Wait for confirmation from the dock and check in the app that the ride has ended. This is one check I never skip.
What if the station is full?
Find another nearby station with free docks in the app.
What if the bike has a problem?
Return it as soon as possible, following the official procedure, and report the defect through the system.
