PEDRA BRANCA MASSIF · CAMORIM · MEMORY AND LANDSCAPE

Pedra do Quilombo Peak

I’ll tell you about this mountain with admiration and care. The name “Quilombo” touches on Afro-Brazilian memories and a complex territorial history; I will not embellish it with an unsupported legend. First, I consider what is documented and respect what still needs research.

🗺️ Explorer challenge: separate the landscape from the name

On the map, locate the Camorim sector and the park entrance. Then consider what evidence is needed before recommending a summit hike: an authorized route, distance, elevation gain, signage and current conditions.

A mountain within Pedra Branca

Pedra do Quilombo is a high point in Pedra Branca State Park on the Jacarepaguá slope. Ernestinho’s research file lists 735 metres as a reference elevation. Before settling on a definitive figure, it needs to be checked against institutional topographic maps and a defined measurement point; I retain it as a reference, not GPS-level precision.

The Transcarioca Trail lists Pedra do Quilombo among the attractions associated with Section 06, a traverse from Casa Amarela to Pau da Fome. This confirms its connection to the corridor but does not establish an independent route, direct public entrance or current condition of a spur.

History also calls for respect

The name is not decorative. The history of the Pedra Branca massif includes rural settlement, sugar mills, farming, enslaved labor, Black residents and communities preserving their memories and territories. To attribute a specific history to this rock, we need documentary sources and the voices of related communities; I will not invent who lived there or what happened based on the name alone.

I also distinguish this mountain from the Cafundá Astrogilda quilombola community and Serra do Quilombo. They are geographic and social realities connected to the massif, but they are not interchangeable names.

Access, hours and preparation

I do not publish turn-by-turn directions or recommend climbing independently. Research has not established a standard trailhead, distance, elevation gain, duration, signage or specific authorization for tourist access. Section 06 provides context, but its 13.4 km and roughly six hours describe the entire section, not an ascent of Pedra do Quilombo.

INEA lists the park’s general administrative hours as Tuesday to Sunday, 8 am–5 pm. Those hours do not confirm that mountain access is open or that you can start at any time. Ask the park and plan only with a current route, suitable weather and enough time to return. Recent rain, storms, fog and fire can change the decision.

What to combine it with

To understand the documented corridor, read the guide to Section 06, la Casa Amarela and the Camorim Park Centre. This pairing provides map and historical context; it is not a suggestion to combine all the visits in one day.
