Hang gliding, mansions and Rocinha

São Conrado Beach

Formerly called Praia da Gávea, it is located in one of the city's most upscale and contrasting neighborhoods.

01

Surrounded by formations such as Pedra da Gávea and Morro Dois Irmãos, São Conrado is a regular landing area for hang gliders and paragliders; operations depend on current conditions and rules.

02

The beach sits among residential buildings and Morro Dois Irmãos, with Rocinha nearby. To learn about the community, seek locally run initiatives and respect its rules and residents’ privacy.

How to plan your visit

Do not confuse scenery with swimming conditions

Waves and water quality can change. Check municipal reports and respect signs before swimming. If the activity includes hang gliding or another operation, check its rules and conditions directly for that day.

Sea conditions, water quality, access and restrictions can change. Check official notices and local signs on the same day; do not use this guide as a real-time report.

São Conrado: a long beach that needs a distance plan

The exact spot changes the plan

São Conrado is a long beach beside Avenida Niemeyer, and its scale shapes the outing: choose your stretch and access before calling a car or leaving the Metro. Hang gliders or paragliders may land on the beach when operations allow; they are part of the scenery, not an activity to assume is available. I would leave time to watch from a safe distance.

Check today’s sea conditions; do not assume

The beach’s length does not mean every point has the same waves or currents. Check INEA for water quality and use flags, lifeguards and local signs to assess the sea that day. With storm swell, lightning or a difficult exit, stay on shore. Choose a sport area that matches your experience and local advice.

Facilities, company and care

Check whether toilets, showers, kiosks, chairs or shade are available at your chosen stretch and ask the full price; services are not uniform along the sand. With children, agree on a meeting point and supervise them near the water and any landing area. For accessibility, check ramps, sand and the whole route from the station or stop. 🐕 Check current pet rules and bring water and bags.

Get there, enjoy the visit and plan the return

São Conrado has a MetrôRio station; check which access suits your chosen stretch. The beach is long, so do not assume the station or a parking space puts you beside every point. Pair it with a viewpoint only if access and hours are confirmed; do not improvise a walk along the highway. EC tip: decide whether you are going for the beach, view or flight and leave time to travel between plans.

Waves, wind, storm swell, sand, weather and bathing-water quality change. This page is not a live report: check the current bulletin and signs on the day.

Verified local context

Landing and take-off are different places

Riotur describes São Conrado as Praia da Gávea and notes free-flight landings on the beach. A landing area is not necessarily a launch site and does not confirm a commercial flight is available; verify operator, conditions and permissions separately.
