A traverse, not a short loop
The Transcarioca Trail lists Section 07 as 11.7 km and about six hours. The official guide rates difficulty as high, risk as low, navigation as difficult, signage as partial and sun exposure as high. My editorial recommendation is to be prepared and experienced with long hikes; these figures describe the full section, not a visit to a viewpoint or aqueduct.
The route connects the Pau da Fome headquarters with the Piraquara subsite. Transcarioca describes varied landscapes—forest, rivers, pasture and paths—and highlights Mirante da Estrada de Furnas, Pedra do Ponto and Aqueduto do Barata. I do not publish turn-by-turn directions or shortcuts: an information page cannot replace a track, trail signs or a licensed guide.
Start time and transport logistics
The park’s published general hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 8 am–5 pm. A route estimated at six hours could use that entire window before accounting for travel, breaks, navigation or changing conditions. Opening time is not a universal “ideal” start time: confirm the latest permitted entry with INEA and plan your start around the park, season and group.
Arrange your return from the second endpoint in advance, check current conditions and bring enough drinking water, food, sun protection, grippy footwear, a downloaded map and a charged phone. The guide lists water points; that does not mean the water is potable or that every point is accessible at all times. Do not rely on cell service or an open shop along the route.
Heritage and scenery along the way
Pedra do Ponto and Aqueduto do Barata connect the hike to geology and the history of water supply. The Transcarioca Trail places the aqueduct among the treetops and describes its construction in the 1960s as part of the water system for the South Zone and Barra. This historical attribution comes from the trail guide; dates, engineering details and the official name still need heritage documentation.
At the Piraquara site, INEA lists access to leisure areas and identifies Cachoeira do Barata as the park’s only waterfall available for swimming. This does not authorize swimming during the traverse or in waterways along the trail. Check rainfall in the watershed, stay out of waterways during storms and follow park notices.
What to combine it with
Before choosing your level of effort, read about Pau da Fome Park Centre, a possible destination on another long route, and Núcleo Piraquara, in the western sector. If you cannot arrange logistics for a traverse between park sites, visit one site and choose a short activity confirmed for that day.
