A base for understanding the massif
INEA identifies Pau da Fome as the headquarters and visitor center for Pedra Branca State Park. The published address is 4,003 Estrada do Pau da Fome, Taquara. The site has a permanent exhibition about the park, as well as reception and environmental interpretation areas. It is a good first stop to get oriented, check notices and ask what is open that day.
Published institutional hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 8 am–5 pm; general park access is free, subject to current rules. Before visiting, I check whether the exhibition and services are operating, whether there is a partial closure or holiday schedule, and the latest time to enter any trail.
A short visit or a day in the mountains
The park sector is worth visiting even without a hike. I can visit the visitor center and enjoy the forest at an easy pace if those areas are open. To continue on a trail, I bring water and food, sun protection and grippy shoes. I do not assume there are restrooms at every stop, drinking water along the route, parking or universal accessibility without confirmation.
Routes of varying difficulty connect to Pau da Fome. Transcarioca Section 06 is long; Section 07 to Piraquara is also a demanding traverse. The word “sector” does not mean every route is short or suitable for all visitors.
The name and the landscape
Ernestinho's research records a local explanation for the name: muleteers would rest and eat under a fig tree, saying they were “no pé da fome.” I treat this as an oral tradition that needs further historical sourcing, not as a settled etymology. The park also highlights the importance of forest and springs in Rio's West Zone.
What to combine it with
For a relaxed visit, pair the park sector with the exhibition and any authorized areas that are open. If you have experience and a full day, consider Section 07 to Piraquara or read the context for Pico da Pedra Branca; those guides distinguish a headquarters visit from the demands of a hike.
