Pedra Rachada

I remember it as a huge boulder split by a fracture that forms a kind of chimney. It is one of the most distinctive highlights of Transcarioca Section 08.

🌿 Explorer challenge: observe the fracture from outside

Look for the line splitting the rock from the trail. Do not enter the crevice or approach if there are bees, wet surfaces or a closure notice.

What you’ll see

Pedra Rachada is described as a large isolated boulder split in two, with a fracture running through it like a chimney. The visible split offers a chance to talk about fracturing and weathering, and how erosion and gravity shape the landscape. I found no confirmed figures for this rock’s elevation, dimensions or age, so I prefer to leave those details open rather than turn a visual impression into a number.

The Transcarioca guide lists Pedra Rachada among Section 08’s highlights, alongside Pedra do Osso, “Jesus Vem,” Aqueduto do Barata and Mirante da Piraquara. It is not an independent route with its own published figures.

The return route recommended by the Transcarioca Trail

The current Section 08 guide lists 4.6 km and about three hours for the full route between Piraquara and Estrada dos Teixeiras. Its access notes recommend an out-and-back from the Piraquara site to Pedra Rachada and back, without exiting toward Estrada dos Teixeiras. This helps with planning, but the source does not list a separate distance for the out-and-back to the rock.

That is why I will not say a visit to Pedra Rachada is 4.6 km or takes exactly three hours. Check the Transcarioca download map and tracklog, confirm the recommended turnaround and ask about current conditions. Do not present an improvised route as a validated track.

Safety and current conditions

Research materials record a previous bee incident in the area, but current activity has not been confirmed. If you see bees or hear activity near the crack, do not approach, block the swarm’s exit or leave the trail. Do not enter the fracture for a photo; only park management can confirm whether the area is open and safe.

The rock is associated with documented climbing, but the research guide does not list a visitor cable. Climbing and visiting on foot are different activities. Do not try to climb the chimney or improvise handholds. I cannot confirm temporary closures, bee activity today or current fire alerts; check official notices before going.

Do not enter during an active fire, heavy smoke, a storm or a park closure. Do not light fires, discard cigarette butts or leave trash. On wet slopes, mud and roots also make the return harder.

Suggested time

INEA lists opening hours as Tuesday to Sunday, 8 am–5 pm. I would start near opening time and leave a generous margin to return before closing.

Section 08 is rated moderate, with partial markings. Bring an offline map, charged phone, power bank, enough water, food, sun protection, insect repellent and grippy footwear. Do not rely on cell service, water points or local services being available.

Ernestinho's tip

Its split shape makes a tempting photo, but I observe it calmly from outside. Before hiking, I tell someone my plan, check with the park and set a return time. If there are bees, smoke, a fire notice or an unsafe trail, the outing can wait.

What to combine it with

Read my guide to Mirante da Piraquara and the guide to Section 05 to understand how the long-distance trail connects different parts of the massif. For this outing, Piraquara is the access reference. Section 08’s attractions are not an invitation to add every summit and branch to the same day.

The 4.6 km figure applies to the full Section 08. Transcarioca recommends returning from Pedra Rachada to Piraquara rather than continuing to Estrada dos Teixeiras; check current notices before going.
