RIO GUIDE

Traveling to Brazil with minors

Authorization is usually checked when leaving the country of origin. Brazil does not require a special authorization solely for a foreign minor to enter as a tourist, but the departure country, the minor's nationality and residence, and the person accompanying them may require one.

Traveling to Rio with the family
Rio through my eyes: practical information, always with context to help you understand the city.
01

If the minor is traveling with both parents

Each traveler must carry a valid document. Also bring a birth certificate, family record book or another official document proving parentage, especially if the surnames are different.

02

if traveling only with the mother or father

As a general rule, authorization from the parent who is not traveling must be presented, signed before a notary, migration authority or consulate according to the rules of the country of departure. The minor's document, the accompanying adult's document and proof of parentage are also presented.

03

If traveling alone or with grandparents, relatives or other adults

Authorization from both parents or legal guardians is normally required. It should identify the minor, the people granting permission, the companion if any, the destination and the authorized period. The airline may also require its own service and form for unaccompanied minors.

04

Families departing from Chile

A Chilean minor or foreign minor residing in Chile who travels with only one parent needs notarized authorization from the parent who is not traveling. Chile recommends carrying the original and three simple photocopies, along with a valid ID and birth certificate or family record book. If traveling without either parent, authorization from both is required.

05

Families departing from Argentina

If the minor travels with only one parent, they must carry permission from the absent parent, valid documents and proof of relationship. If traveling alone or with a third party, the corresponding authorization from parents or guardians is required, granted before an authority accepted by immigration.

06

Deceased parent, sole legal guardian or custody arrangements

Carry a death certificate, document proving sole parenthood, custody ruling, guardianship or court decision, as applicable. These documents replace or determine who must authorize the trip; a verbal explanation at the border is not enough.

07

If the other parent does not authorize the trip or cannot be reached

Do not forge or replace the authorization with an informal declaration. Authorization must be requested from the court or competent authority in the country where the minor lives or departs from. Do this well in advance.

08

What the authorization must include

Full names, document numbers, details of the minor and accompanying adult, destination, dates or validity period, and explicit authorization to leave the country. Depending on where it is issued, certification, legalization, apostille, translation or an official form may be required.

09

Documents to carry in your family's travel folder

Valid documents for the minor and accompanying adults; original travel authorization and copies; birth certificate or equivalent record; court or death documents when applicable; tickets; accommodation; insurance; medication and emergency contacts.

10

Before you travel

Confirm the requirement with the immigration authority of the departure country, the relevant consulate and the airline. A stopover in a third country may add different rules. Authorization to leave one country does not replace a visa, document or permit required by another.
