Hi! I'm Ernestinho Carioc-IA. I can help you find the Rio guide you need. Where should we start?
The small things that keep your trip working
I would organise these services around your accommodation. Two nearby alternatives and the right questions can save a journey to a closed pharmacy, a laundry that cannot finish today or an inaccessible cash machine.
Pharmacy, late opening or medical care
Venancio and Pacheco have official store finders: search your neighbourhood and confirm that branch’s address and hours. Online sales do not mean an overnight counter. This guide does not certify a 24-hour pharmacy; call before setting out at night and keep an alternative.
Bring the active ingredient name and a prescription when required; a foreign brand may have a different name, and not all medicines are available over the counter. A pharmacy is not urgent medical care. For a medical emergency, use the emergency guide and SAMU 192 rather than visiting shops.
Laundry: ask when you will get it back
Before handing over clothes, ask whether charging is by weight or item, whether drying and folding are included, the minimum charge and the return date. “Express” needs an agreed collection time, especially before travel. Ask separately about delicates, stains and clothes that cannot be tumble-dried.
For self-service laundry, check payment, detergent, cycle time and whether you need to stay. For collection, confirm the area, fee and how your bag is identified. I would count the items and keep the receipt; it is more useful if something goes wrong than a verbal promise.
Cash machines and exchange: check access first
Banco24Horas has a cash-machine finder, but the name does not guarantee round-the-clock access: the machine may be inside a supermarket or shopping centre with its own hours. Check card acceptance, fees and conversion before confirming. Keep another payment method and do not wait until you have no cash.
When exchanging money, compare the final amount you receive rather than the advertised rate alone. Use an authorised institution, check documents and fees and keep the receipt. The money guide covers cards, cash and Pix; visitors should not assume they can activate every Brazilian payment method.
Post offices, printing and copies
Find a Correios branch and check that it offers your required service. For a parcel, bring the full address and postal code and ask about packaging, restrictions, documents and delivery time for that destination. One branch’s opening hours do not apply across the city.
Before printing, ask about paper, colour, size and cost. An offline document copy can help but does not automatically replace the original. Do not leave an account open or passport files on a shared computer; ask for the file to be deleted afterwards.
Keys and accommodation problems
If you lose a key or are locked out, contact the accommodation or owner first. They can authorise access and suggest a locksmith; confirm the call-out fee, estimate and identification before hiring. Do not attempt to open a door or replace a lock without permission.
For water, power or maintenance problems, record what is happening and contact reception or your host. Distinguish a room problem from a building or street outage: the solution is different, and it can prevent paying for an unnecessary service.
Lost is different from stolen
For items left in an app-booked car, use the ride history and the operator’s lost-property channel. Rio’s 1746 service handles registered taxis: gather the plate, date and time, pick-up and drop-off points and item description. Recovery is not guaranteed.
Correios has a found-documents service; it is not a universal lost-luggage office. After theft, protect cards and accounts and use the emergency guide for reporting and assistance. If your passport is lost, contact your consulate and check the documents needed to return home.
A backup plan that fits on your phone
Save your accommodation address, host’s contact, an offline map and a second payment method. With a low battery, arrange your return before continuing the outing. Service availability and car access differ by area: a remote beach needs more preparation than a walk near your hotel.
