You do not need perfect Portuguese to handle everyday situations. I would save your accommodation address, destination name and simple phrases such as “Could you repeat that more slowly, please?” and “How much does it cost?” On a restaurant bill, confirm what the price includes; before getting into a taxi or app ride, check the destination and vehicle. Speaking calmly, showing the text and asking someone to repeat it often works better than translating word for word.
This isn’t meant to be a course. These are short phrases you may actually need in Rio: arriving, calling a car, sitting on the beach, paying, eating, explaining a health problem or asking for help. Tap 🔊 to hear Brazilian Portuguese and 🐢 to replay the same recording more slowly.
Mi frase salvavidas

If you don’t understand, ask them to speak more slowly, write it down or show you the place on a map. That solves more situations than memorizing hundreds of words.
