Transcarioca Trail · Section 26: Ilha Comprida

I’ll tell you about this place through its landscape and the experience on the ground: what to expect, what to confirm and how to return without treating a general guide as a promise of access.

🌿 Ernestinho’s challenge: three clues in the landscape

Find a landform, a detail in the vegetation and a clue to how the city or sea relates to this place. Stay on the trail, respect people and do not touch or feed wildlife.

What this section connects

The Transcarioca Trail describes this route as Trilha da Comprida, Ilha Comprida · sea access from Rio de Janeiro. The technical guide lists Transcarioca guide: 1.2 km · approx. 1 h and rates the difficulty as Moderate in the section guide. These are orientation references, not a guarantee that the route is open or that conditions will remain the same that day.

Navigation and current conditions: The activity depends on authorized transport operators and guides, the visitor protocol, sea and wind conditions, and ICMBio decisions. Confirm availability, marine forecasts and any suspensions on the day.

The place beyond the figures

An island route unlike a city walk

Ilha Comprida is part of the federal Cagarras Islands Natural Monument, a strict-protection conservation unit a few kilometers offshore. The Transcarioca guide describes a rocky 1.2 km trail taking about an hour. In 2026, ICMBio published accreditation processes for guides on Trilha da Comprida and water transport for the activity. I therefore present this as an organized, regulated experience, never as “taking a boat and landing wherever you like.”

Access and safety come first

Access is by sea, and landing on a rocky shore requires coordination and suitable conditions. Before considering the trip, check the official visitor protocol, current lists of authorized guides and operators, sea conditions and whether the area is open for the activity. I do not recommend swimming from a vessel or assume any boat can approach or land. If the operator or ICMBio cancels for weather or safety, the visit is canceled.

A window into marine life, not a playground

Cagarras’ value lies in its habitats, birds and marine landscape. Walk only where the guide authorizes, do not remove shells or stones, feed wildlife or approach animals. The sun is strong and there is no drinking water or shop on the island; plan with the crew and take everything back with you. Agree on the trip duration with the crew.

What still needs to be confirmed

The Transcarioca and ICMBio guides answer different questions: one provides historical section figures, while the other manages current visits. Before publishing definitive operational advice, the authorized Trilha da Comprida route still needs to be checked against the current map and protocol. ICMBio’s page links to documents, service lists and updates.

How to prepare

Before setting out, I would check notices, weather and the official map; download the track for the current recommendation, arrange transport back and bring water, sun protection and suitable footwear. An easy rating does not remove heat, slopes or changing terrain. Follow signs, do not feed animals and do not enter structures, closed areas or private property.

Water: There is no drinking water on the island. Bring everything you need on an organized trip and leave no waste.

Map and return

The map below shows the general area; it is not a walking track or confirmation of an entrance. Open the official download and check where your chosen variant begins. If the current recommendation is an out-and-back route, return the same way; do not improvise another exit based on a general map pin.

What to combine it with

I would make this the main outing of the day, without pairing it with another trail or a strict museum or transfer time. If sea conditions prevent departure, plan B is to enjoy the waterfront in Ipanema or Mirante do Leblon, where you can talk about the archipelago without stepping into a fragile environment.
