What this section connects
The Transcarioca Trail describes this route as Catacumba Municipal Natural Park Circuit. The technical guide lists 1.1 km · approx. 1 h and rates the difficulty as Easy. These are orientation references, not a guarantee that the route is open or that conditions will remain the same that day.
Hours and time of day: The city lists Parque da Catacumba as open Tuesday to Sunday, 6 am to 5 pm, and closed on Mondays. Holidays, maintenance and temporary closures can change this schedule, so check the day’s notices before going.
The place beyond the figures
A short walk that changes the city’s sound
The appeal is in the contrast: I enter from the avenue, leave traffic behind and climb through vegetation and outdoor sculptures. The official route links the circuit to Mirantes da Sacopã and do Urubu, with views toward Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Pedra da Gávea, Serra da Carioca and Christ the Redeemer. Both viewpoints are detours from the main route; follow signs and return the same way without creating shortcuts.
The place’s history, told with respect
The city notes that the current park is linked to the removal of Favela da Catacumba in the early 1970s and opened in 1979. I do not turn that history into a light curiosity: a community and families were affected by a policy of removals. During a visit, sculptures, landscape and the memory of this place can share the same conversation, with care and context.
What to notice along the way
Here’s a small game: choose a sculpture, find a texture in the forest, then identify a familiar shape in the city from the viewpoint. If vegetation covers part of the panorama, that counts too; there is no need to leave the trail for a photo. Views depend on weather, light and foliage.
Do not confuse the park circuit with the continuation of the Transcarioca
The official route page describes both the viewpoint circuit and a connection continuing toward Rua Vitória Régia. The municipal guide describes an internal loop. These are different plans. I would choose the park loop for a one-hour visit; connecting to another section requires separate checks of the track, exits, streets and logistics, and should not begin near park closing time.
How to prepareBefore setting out, I would check notices, weather and the official map; download the track for the current recommendation, arrange transport back and bring water, sun protection and suitable footwear. An easy rating does not remove heat, slopes or changing terrain. Follow signs, do not feed animals and do not enter structures, closed areas or private property.
Water: The Transcarioca lists drinking fountains in the park; check that they are working and bring your own bottle. Drinking water is not guaranteed on the viewpoint detours.
Map and return
The map below shows the general area; it is not a walking track or confirmation of an entrance. Open the official download and check where your chosen variant begins. If the current recommendation is an out-and-back route, return the same way; do not improvise another exit based on a general map pin.
What to combine it with
This is easy to pair with a walk or bike ride around the lagoon, a break in the waterfront gardens or a visit to Jardim Botânico another time. Keep the trail’s duration separate from a full lap around the lagoon; they take different amounts of time. With children, turn the visit into a search for sculptures and shapes in the landscape, without racing to the finish.
