Transcarioca Trail · Section 17

I’ll help you choose this section with your eyes open: consider the landscape, difficulty and return logistics before setting out. The official guide provides reference figures; weather, closures and conditions can change.

3.9 km · approx. 2 h 30 minDifficulty: EasyEasy navigation · good markings · low sun exposure · low risk
🌳 Ernestinho’s challenge: observe without leaving a trace

Find three clues about the place: one from the forest, one from its history or water, and one showing how the city appears around it. Do not touch wildlife or enter structures; stay on the trail.

What this section connects

The Transcarioca Trail describes this route as Dona Castorina / Jequitibá → Cachoeira dos Primatas, along a corridor through forest, neighborhoods and visitor areas. It lists 3.9 km · approx. 2 h 30 min and difficulty Easy. Technical details are summarized in the side panel. These figures describe the section, not necessarily a round trip from the same point.

For timing, I would choose a morning and confirm opening, closing and conditions at both ends. In Tijuca National Park, the Transcarioca lists general hours of 8 am to 5 pm; individual access points may have their own controls or notices. Confirm the hours for this section’s access points and plan to return before the protected area closes.

What you’ll find

A forest section connecting the Jequitibá landmark to Cachoeira dos Primatas, with Cachoeira da Gruta, streams and Mirante do Horto along the way. Monkey or bird sightings can never be guaranteed.

Observe the jequitibá tree with care

The Transcarioca Trail mentions a century-old jequitibá and describes it as hollow. I invite you to admire its size from the trail without entering the trunk, leaning on its roots or damaging the tree. A close-up photo is not worth harming an ancient living being.

Water and waterfalls: no swimming promise

The route guide describes streams and waterfalls as features of the landscape. Water flow, quality and swimming rules can vary. After rain, when the current is strong or if there is a closure notice, stay out of the water. The map point in the guide does not replace park signage.

How to prepare

Bring your own water, suitable footwear and the official map downloaded. On urban sections, watch for crossings, vehicles and cyclists. In the mountains, rain, wet rocks and heat can slow even an easy hike. Do not feed monkeys or other wildlife; secure food and observe from a distance.

A waterfall does not mean swimming is permitted or safe. Do not enter the water after heavy rain, when the flow is strong or if signs close access. At caves, ruins and old trees, respectful observation is the best way to preserve the experience.

Map and return

This guide’s map shows a general reference, not a walking track. Use the official download for navigation and plan your return in advance. If the section starts and ends in different parks, check both schedules; in urban areas, identify safe crossings and public transport stops.

What to combine it with

When you finish in the Cachoeira dos Primatas area, rest and plan whether to continue or return. Section 18 heads toward Paineiras and has different difficulty and risk; linking them makes the day considerably more demanding. For a city option, return to Jardim Botânico using confirmed transport.
