Work connected to the water
Artisanal fishing brings together local practices, knowledge and economies shaped by environmental conditions and management rules. Baía de Sepetiba is a large system; no catch figure alone describes every community or the current status of each species. To learn about fishing, I look for projects and activities announced by their organizers.
Mangroves, bay and daily life
Mangroves provide habitat and feeding areas for wildlife and are connected to the health of coastal waters. State sources describe their ecological and social importance to the Guaratiba Biological Reserve. This relationship deserves attention to both conservation and ways of life, without turning fishers into an attraction or photographing their work without consent.
Visit respectfully
This page does not organize outings, recommend boat trips or identify fishing or landing spots. If a local association offers a public activity, confirm who organizes it, what it includes, the safety rules and its impact on the area. Do not interrupt work, handle nets, boats or catches, or publish workers’ personal information.
Purchasing and useful questions
If you buy fish, ask where it came from and what is in season, and follow current health and conservation advice. I do not provide a fixed list of “typical” species or claim there is direct sales at a specific spot without confirmation. Water quality, fishing seasons and rules can change.
A landscape-watching mission
From a public place, observe how the coast, channels and vegetation connect with urban life. Consider what information a community needs to protect its resources and sustain its work. The best photo may be of the landscape; ask permission when people are in the frame.
