What the circuit offers
The official guide to Transcarioca Section 04 mentions a Cachoeira do Engenho / Alto da Capelinha circuit returning to Farol da Prata. It is an alternative to the full linear traverse between Morgado and Rio da Prata, but that does not mean it is short, easy or suitable for everyone.
The Library research connects the water and viewpoint as parts of one landscape: Atlantic Forest and stream, the climb toward Capelinha and the return to Rio da Prata. I do not publish turn-by-turn directions or a personal track. Use official maps and follow current guidance from the park and access operator.
Distance, duration and grade
I found no independently verified figures for the circular route. The Section 04 guide lists 11.5 km, around 7 hours and high difficulty for the full Morgado–Rio da Prata connection; those figures do not apply to this circuit. Do not add or subtract app estimates without verifying the authorised route.
Because of its mountain terrain and elevation gain, treat this as a hike that requires preparation until an official source publishes specific figures. Confirm expected time, elevation gain, start, return and deadline before committing the day.
Suggested time and water conditions
Ask whether access is operating and by what time you must return. If the route is open, I would start early in the morning and allow time for breaks and changes of pace; I would not set off in the late afternoon.
A waterfall’s presence does not confirm that swimming is permitted or the water is safe. The Section 05 guide warns that Cachoeira do Engenho’s water is not potable; separately verify whether swimming is allowed and check stream conditions. Do not enter after heavy rain in the catchment, rising water, storms or any alert. Carry enough potable water for the entire hike.
Map and general access
This map locates the general Rio da Prata area, not the waterfall, Alto da Capelinha or the circuit route. Transcarioca mentions Farol da Prata as the start and return reference, with a signed climb connecting to the main trail. Check whether that entrance and local services are still operating; do not assume camping, lodging or food without a current booking.
Download the official Transcarioca map and tracklog, check alerts, save offline maps and agree on a return plan. Bring grippy footwear, rain gear, sun protection, a charged battery, food and water. Phone coverage may be limited.
What to combine it with
The proposed combination is already part of the route: Cachoeira do Engenho and Alto da Capelinha, returning on the circuit described by Transcarioca. Do not add Alto da Bela Vista, Casa Amarela or Section 05 as if they were quick neighbouring stops; they belong to other mountain routes or connections. If weather or trail conditions make the circuit unsuitable, choose a confirmed rural activity in Rio da Prata instead.
Who it is for
I would consider it for hikers used to mountain terrain, with enough navigation skill and pace to keep the group together. Until route figures and current access are assessed, I would not classify it as an easy family swimming trip, a first hike or an accessible route. Groups should agree on a turnaround point and stay together.
Planning sources
Trilha Transcarioca confirms the circuit and its Farol da Prata return reference. Check its notices alongside those from the park.
