RIO GUIDE
The bus terminal and port receive thousands of travelers, but they are in different areas. Before arriving, it helps to know where to wait, how to continue your journey and what to do with your luggage.

Rio's main long-distance bus terminal is in Santo Cristo, near the Port District. Services leave from here for Búzios, Cabo Frio, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and many other Brazilian destinations.
You will find ticket offices, restrooms, shops, food, ATMs and waiting areas. Buy tickets from recognized companies or platforms and confirm the platform, time, company and destination before handing over your luggage.
You can use a taxi, ride-hailing apps or the VLT from the nearby stop. Public transport can be practical for downtown and the Port District, but with several bags a direct vehicle is usually more comfortable.
Keep the receipt for every checked bag and do not hand luggage to people without a uniform or identification. Keep documents, money, medications and valuables with you.
The cruise terminal is in the Port District, close to Boulevard Olímpico, Museu do Amanhã and Praça Mauá. The exact pier and access points may change depending on the ship and that day's operation.

If you disembark for a few hours, always allow time for the return, controls and distance back to the pier. The Historic Center and Port District allow nearby routes; Christ the Redeemer or beaches require more time.
The VLT connects the port district with downtown, Santos Dumont, Central and the area near Novo Rio. Check the line, direction and payment method before boarding.
We can meet you at Novo Rio or the cruise terminal and take you directly to your accommodation, airport or activity. Send the company or ship, time, number of passengers, bags and destination for a quote.
Before leaving the ship, confirm all-aboard time, the operating berth and which entrance to return to. Another ship’s schedule is not a guide. Save Pier Mauá’s address, the cruise line’s instructions and an onboard contact on your phone.
With only a few hours, stay in Centro and the port district: Boulevard Olímpico, Praça Mauá, MAR and Museu do Amanhã are nearby. Check tickets and opening times before choosing a museum; a walk can be the main outing if the ship leaves soon. Check current VLT lines and stops and allow for queues.
With more time, consider AquaRio, the historic centre or Pequena África, allowing for travel and entry time. I would not add Christ the Redeemer, beaches or distant shopping to a short port call: traffic, rain and queues can affect your return. A guided tour or booked transfer needs a meeting point and return time agreed in writing.
Heavy rain can affect walking and traffic. Choose an indoor stop with confirmed hours and a short journey, and keep a backup if it closes. If mobility access matters, ask the terminal and operator what entrances, lifts, surfaces and assistance are available that day. A nearby station does not guarantee a step-free route to the ship.
Set an alarm to start returning with a buffer, not to arrive at the deadline. Allow for walking, checks, waiting, traffic and a backup ride. Ship schedules change: follow your cruise line’s instructions and Pier Mauá signs.
