Why I include it
Founded in 1951, Renascença became a historic space for Black social life and culture in Rio. Its music circles and projects helped discover and sustain artists and samba traditions.
How to experience it
I would go for a specific music circle or event rather than treat it as a bar open every night. When there is a programme, the experience has cultural significance far beyond going out for drinks.
My Ernestinho tip
Andaraí is outside the usual tourist circuit. Confirm the time, admission and event; for both journeys, especially at night, I would arrange an app/taxi.
I would choose a date based on the musical project announced, since a small samba circle and a special show can draw different crowds and sounds. Before setting out, check whether it is open to the public, what admission includes and how the space is arranged; Renascença is also a community club, not just a place to get a drink. Arrive curious about the music and let the event shape the evening.
