Why I include it
It is in the heart of Pequena África, and its history is linked to the Black population, port labour, religions of African origin and the development of Rio samba. INEPAC protected the site between 1984 and 1987 as a testament to Brazil’s African heritage.
How to experience it
I would arrive while it is still light to walk around Largo da Prainha, see the stone and understand the area before the streets fill up. Outdoor samba circles and gatherings depend on the local programme and organisers; check what is announced for your date and remember that weather or holidays may affect the plan.
My Ernestinho tip
My tip: do not come expecting a nightclub. Here the experience happens in the street. Bring only what you need, watch your phone in crowds and, for a late return, request a ride from a well-lit, busy spot.
