A hotel rooftop with Copacabana views
Moonlounge is associated with JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro, opposite the beach at Avenida Atlântica, 2600. Riotur describes a rooftop bar with sandwiches, salads and juices in the morning, and antipasti and special drinks at other times. Riotur’s own tourism listing publishes broad hours and music programming from Thursday to Saturday. Since hotel operations can change, I would call before treating those hours as confirmed.
The concept differs from a nightclub: the appeal is the view, a drink and something to eat while watching the waterfront. A specialist guide describes the pool and part of the lounge as exclusive to hotel guests, while presenting the bar as accessible to visitors. Marriott’s information on rooftop access is currently unclear. I therefore distinguish the areas and do not promise public entry without direct confirmation.
What to order and when to go
The international street-food concept began as a rooftop food-truck service with recipes by chef Thomaz Leão and sides such as cassava or potatoes. The hotel also promotes sunset drinks. The exact menu, service location and availability may vary; ask whether the menu is active on your chosen date.
Riotur publishes Sunday to Wednesday from 10 am–10 pm and Thursday to Saturday until 1 am, with music. Those hours cover daytime activities as well as the evening bar; do not automatically interpret them as free access to the pool or whole terrace. If you want to see sunset, confirm its time, bookings and the policy for non-guests.
How to plan your visit
I would include it as a quiet start to the evening, rather than the only destination if you want to dance late. I would call the hotel on +55 21 2545-6500 and ask: “Is Moonlounge open to non-guests today? What are the bar’s hours? Is the pool/sun terrace only for guests? Is a booking required?” If they confirm entry, keep the name of the person who helped and the booking channel.
I did not find a substantial body of recent, verifiable bar reviews that would justify promising consistent service. Reviews of the hotel’s rooftops often praise the view, but they do not replace access information from the operator.
My Ernestinho tip
Do not organise the whole outing around the pool or assume the entire rooftop is public. Confirm access to the bar and the area you want to use with JW Marriott; if they say yes, plan your timing around sunset.
