Why I include it
The Carnival group and cultural space are deeply connected to Rio’s samba history. Its music circle nurtured musicians and the style known as backyard pagode, with an influence extending far beyond the neighbourhood.
How to experience it
I would not treat it as a conventional tourist attraction. Go for a confirmed music circle or event, respecting the place, community and history.
My Ernestinho tip
Olaria is far from the South Zone. Confirm the event before leaving and plan your return; for first-time Rio visitors I would prioritise an app/taxi at night.
Before choosing a night, I would confirm what kind of gathering is taking place: a samba circle, feijoada, rehearsal or special celebration can feel different and may have different entry arrangements. Cacique has its own history and community, so I check the event rules and follow the venue’s guidance, especially for photos and filming. That lets me experience local samba without treating the quadra as a backdrop.
