Why I include it
It occupies one of the Port Zone’s most beautiful historic corners. Its concept centres on the Rio neighbourhood bar and grilling: Riotur highlights barbecue in a metal drum, plus snacks such as pastéis and smoked-chicken coxinha. In 2026 it continues to appear in Rio’s food listings and maintains @bafodaprainha as its social channel.
How to experience it
I would think of it as an afternoon that can become an evening. Arriving in daylight lets you enjoy the square, eat calmly and then join the music when there is a samba circle or cultural programme. Do not assume the same samba every day: check Instagram before going.
My Ernestinho tip
If exploring the Port Zone, combine Bafo with Largo da Prainha, Pedra do Sal and a walk through Pequena África. At night, for the return to Copacabana, I prefer to request transport from the square itself or a busy street.
I would combine food and samba without a tight schedule: the bustle at Largo da Prainha can make finding a table or waiting for an order take longer than expected. Check the menu and any music charge before sitting down, and leave energy for the return from the Port Zone. If you are in a group, agree on a meeting point; in a crowd, the bar’s name alone is not enough to reunite.
