Gentileza Intermodal Terminal

A major interchange linking the Transbrasil BRT, VLT and municipal buses. I explain how to navigate it and what to check so you do not lose time during your transfer.

Connections

Think of Gentileza as a connection point, not your final destination

The Municipal Transport Secretariat lists connections between the Transbrasil BRT, VLT lines 1 and 4, and city buses. From here, you can continue to Downtown, the Port Zone, Santos Dumont Airport or other neighbourhoods; the service depends on the line and time.

Transbrasil BRT

It connects the terminal with the Avenida Brasil corridor and other system terminals. Check the station, service type—local or express—and direction before boarding.

VLT Carioca

SMTR describes lines 1 and 4 as links to Santos Dumont and Praça XV. Use the operator’s current map to confirm the route and transfer stop.

City buses

Several routes start, end or pass through the terminal. Routes may change, so use the city planner with your exact destination and departure time.

Entrances and wayfinding

Allow time to change platforms

The terminal has two levels: arrivals for the different modes are downstairs; upstairs are ticket offices, bathrooms, shops and a waiting room for the special service to Galeão. SMTR lists full accessibility and walkways from the bus terminal, Rua São Cristóvão and Avenida Brasil, plus an entrance on Avenida Francisco Bicalho.

The terminal is spacious. Follow the signs to the next platform and allow time to walk, buy a ticket or validate your payment method.

Cards and transfers

Confirm how to pay for each leg

Jaé lists transfers between municipal buses, BRT and VLT under the Bilhete Único Carioca rules. Bilhete Único Margaridas has separate terms for certain intercity trips. Do not assume every card or single ticket qualifies for a transfer; check the official terms and use the required payment medium.

Jaé and BUC

Jaé’s help page explains municipal transfer rules and accepted methods. Check the FAQ before relying on a discounted connection.

Service to Galeão

SMTR has listed a direct executive service between Gentileza and Galeão. Frequency, fare, platform and operations may change; check the latest notice before using it.

For your itinerary

Use the terminal as a reference point and compare total journey time: getting here, waiting, changing platforms and the final leg to your accommodation.

Reviewed on September 25, 2026. Fares, routes, schedules and platforms are operational details; check official channels on the day of your trip.

How I use it

Gentileza makes previously awkward connections easier

I see it as a connecting hub: here you can switch between BRT Transbrasil, VLT and municipal buses without needing to understand the whole Port Zone. The key is to arrive knowing your next transport mode and destination.

To Galeão

A direct executive service between Terminal Gentileza and Galeão is advertised as operating daily. I would confirm the schedule and fare on the day of the flight.

To the South Zone

The terminal brings together municipal routes to Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana, São Conrado and other areas. Check the current route number and itinerary.

To downtown and Praça XV

The VLT connects Gentileza with downtown; Line 4 goes to Praça XV and Line 1 to Santos Dumont.

⭐ Ernestinho’s tip: if you arrive with luggage from Rodoviária, do not judge the connection only by map distance. Gentileza is large: allow time to walk, find your way, validate your fare and wait for the next vehicle.
