Frequency and capacity
The official site lists departures every 15 minutes and capacity for 32 passengers per tram. On busy days, tickets may sell out before closing time.
Transport · Santa Teresa
A historic tram and a different way to reach Santa Teresa. Before setting out, check service, the boarding point and ticket availability.
How to plan your visit
The departure station is at Rua Lélio Gama, 2, in Downtown. The state operator says tickets are sold there; sales at Curvelo depend on availability. Arrive early because capacity is limited and boarding can fill up.

The official page I checked lists a R$20 ticket, payable in cash or by debit/credit card. It says Pix and concession tickets are not accepted; check for updates before travelling.
The operator asks passengers to be on the platform when buying a ticket. Official information says passengers must get off at Carioca; check the day’s route and rules on the service board.

Operator-published hours
Monday to Friday: 08:00–18:30.
Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: 09:00–17:00.
These were the hours on the official page when I reviewed this guide. The board may show ticket sales closing or real-time service changes, so check before travelling. Do not assume the last boarding time is the closing time.

My practical advice
Limited capacity and queues require more planning than a city bus ride. I would check service with the official source, buy a ticket in person at Carioca and plan the Santa Teresa visit around the available schedule. To return downtown, plan to come back to the same reference point.
Official information reviewed on September 25, 2026. Hours, fare, sales location and service may change; check the State Government website.
The Ernestinho experience
The tram is part of Santa Teresa's identity. I would go for the ride, the neighborhood and the views, rather than because it is necessarily the fastest way there. Carioca station is downtown, and the outing begins before you even board.
With only 32 passengers per train, capacity matters much more on busy days than on the metro or VLT.
Plan the tram as part of a neighborhood visit and allow time to walk. Do not build a tight schedule around an exact departure.
Operations, prices and ticket sales can change. Make the official state government website your final check before going.
⭐ Ernestinho’s tip: if you want to enjoy it at an easy pace, I would avoid arriving near closing time. Go early, confirm operations and let Santa Teresa be an outing rather than a race against the clock.
