Surf, Nature Reserves & Space
Recreio dos Bandeirantes Beach
A long beach at the end of Av. Sernambetiba, continuing from Barra da Tijuca. It has hosted international surfing and bodyboarding competitions.
Excellent kiosk and bike-lane infrastructure with modern buildings in a relaxed, natural setting.
How to plan your visit
A long beach to combine with the West Zone
Recreio offers a long waterfront in the West Zone and can form part of a day with other places along the coast. Choose your stretch in advance: distances are large, and access points do not all have the same services.
Respect natural conditions
Check waves, water quality and local notices before swimming. If you surf or do another sport, use suitable areas and follow local operators’ guidance. Bring water, sun protection and a return plan.
Sea conditions, water quality, access and restrictions can change. Check official notices and local signs on the same day; do not use this guide as a real-time report.
Recreio: choose a posto for what you want to do
The exact spot changes the plan
“Recreio” covers a long stretch, and postos help you meet and choose facilities. Share the posto number or a street; “I’m in Recreio” leaves too much unclear. You can pair the beach with Pedra do Pontal, but treat the climb as a separate activity and confirm access is open and safe.
Check today’s sea conditions; do not assume
The sea can be powerful and conditions vary by stretch and time. Check INEA for water quality and follow flags, lifeguards and local signs for currents and waves; one does not replace the other. With storm swell, lightning or no clear exit, stay out of the water. Surf only at a level and place suited to the day’s conditions.
Facilities, company and care
Some stretches are busier than others; check kiosks, toilets, showers, shade and prices where you plan to stay. With family, choose a visible landmark and supervise children near the water. If mobility access matters, check the route from parking or transit to the promenade and sand. 🐕 Check pet rules, bring water and keep animals out of direct sun.
Get there, enjoy the visit and plan the return
Check MetrôRio and BRT when choosing your route; there may still be a walk from the station or stop, and traffic changes driving time. Recreio pairs with Pontal and Macumba, but choose just a couple of stops and arrange your return first. EC tip: if you want sunset, plan how you will get back afterwards, not only how to arrive.
Waves, wind, storm swell, sand, weather and bathing-water quality change. This page is not a live report: check the current bulletin and signs on the day.

La costa abierta pide leer el mar con calma
Recreio has a long ocean beach with surfing at different stretches. Swimming conditions change by location and day; do not use a surf photo or session as a forecast. Check INEA bathing-water information and follow signs and lifeguard advice.
