Hi! I'm Ernestinho Carioc-IA. I can help you find the Rio guide you need. Where should we start?
Pepê: starting with Barra’s urban end
I would choose this stretch to combine the beach with Jardim Oceânico. It is still open ocean: nearby kiosks and neighbourhood life do not turn its waves into calm swimming.
A stretch of Barra, not a separate coastline
Pepê is Barra’s initial stretch, associated with Quebra-Mar, Avenida do Pepê and post 2. Rio Film Commission links the name to athlete and entrepreneur Pedro Paulo, Pepê, and his juice-and-sandwich beach offer. I would use a specific kiosk or address to meet the group; popular names do not mark exact sand boundaries.

Sports need conditions; swimming needs assessment
Surfing, bodyboarding, windsurfing and kitesurfing are part of the stretch’s identity. Choose an activity suited to your level and check wind, waves and the activity area; do not improvise among swimmers. Sea, currents and storm swell need a same-day assessment. Use the relevant INEA point, not a favourable result elsewhere. Sand also varies with tides and sea conditions.
Metro plus the final stretch
Jardim Oceânico is the metro reference for this end, but its station exit is not on the sand. Compare walking or a connection based on heat, bags and the exact address. A taxi/app can simplify travel with bags without guaranteeing speed at busy times. Check authorised parking and the crossing to the beach; keep cycle lanes and access points clear.
Beach food and neighbourhood food
Kiosks are nearby and Jardim Oceânico has food options. Choose the sand or a seated meal and check the venue’s current hours and menu rather than treating Pepê’s historical menu as current. Stalls, vendors and kiosks do not share one bill: ask about chairs, umbrellas, minimum spend and total. Resolve toilets, showers and drinking water with the actual service.

Children, mobility and 🐕
For families, choose shade and a nearby break before deciding to swim; a kiosk does not change the waves. For disabled visitors, check kerb ramps, crossings, access to the sand and toilets at your stop; no barrier-free route or water assistance is certified here. With a dog, meet municipal-law conditions, bring a leash, water and waste bags, and check designated areas and venue policies.
A comfortable outing needs breathing room
I would avoid midday heat when walking from the metro. Sunrise and afternoon light depend on the season; there is no promised ocean sunset from here. At night, choose a venue and arranged transport rather than isolated sand or the breakwater as an automatic extension. Pack water, sun protection, battery power and few valuables. Avoid the breakwater during storm swell and unattended belongings while swimming.
Jardim Oceânico and Olegário Maciel
For food or another stop, compare Jardim Oceânico and Olegário Maciel with what you want; the beach and nightlife have different rhythms. Gigóia needs its own connection and is not a guaranteed walking continuation. Choose a stop compatible with your return, not add Reserva or Recreio simply because they are also west.
