Where should you stay in Rio de Janeiro?

Where to Stay in Rio

Rio de Janeiro is a huge city, and choosing where to stay can completely shape your experience. For a first trip, I recommend looking for a place with good transport, shops and restaurants nearby, and easy access to the main sights.

There are many areas where you can stay. Here I combine neighbourhood guidance, our apartments in Copacabana and options to compare which area best fits the way you travel.

Copacabana Beach and its promenade

Copacabana

Copacabana has practically everything a visitor might need: beaches, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, pharmacies, shops, hotels and apartments at different price points. It also has several metro stations and plenty of transport options for getting around the city.

It is a lively, tourist-oriented area, especially convenient for people who want to step outside their accommodation and find many things within a short walk.

Many travellers also appreciate the range: from budget accommodation to higher-category hotels, making it possible to choose an option for different budgets.

“If this is your first time in Rio, Copacabana would probably be my first recommendation. Not because it is the only good place to stay, but because it puts many things close by and lets you start exploring without making transport too complicated.”

Ipanema

Ipanema is one of Rio’s best-known and most charming areas. It brings together the beach, restaurants, bars, shops, cafés and nightlife, with excellent metro connections too.

It is a somewhat more exclusive area, and accommodation can generally cost more than in Copacabana. In return, it offers a distinctive atmosphere and puts you close to places such as Arpoador, Lagoa and Leblon.

If you enjoy walking, good food, cafés, the beach and plenty of options nearby, Ipanema is an excellent choice.

“If you find good accommodation in Ipanema at a price similar to Copacabana, I would seriously consider it. The location is excellent and the area has a character of its own.”

Barra da Tijuca

Barra da Tijuca is very different from Copacabana and Ipanema. It is a more modern area, with large buildings, gated communities, shopping centres, restaurants and vast beaches.

It is a great alternative for people looking for quiet, space and modern accommodation. It can also suit longer stays or travellers who already know Rio and want to experience another part of the city.

Lapa Arches and historic downtown Rio architecture

Downtown and Lapa

Downtown Rio offers a completely different experience. You will find historic buildings, museums, churches, the Municipal Theatre, Lapa, bars, restaurants and a huge part of the city’s history.

It can also be a more affordable option for some types of accommodation and has excellent transport links, including the metro and VLT.

For people whose priority is the beach and the South Zone neighbourhoods, it may be less convenient. Depending on the time and exact area, take extra care when choosing where to stay and how to get around.

“If you choose to stay downtown, I would think carefully about the exact location and your trip back at night. Downtown can be wonderful for experiencing Rio’s historic and bohemian side, but may not be the most practical choice for a first visit focused on beaches and classic sightseeing.”

Other areas worth considering

Rio has many other options. Flamengo, Botafogo, Leme, Leblon, São Conrado, Recreio dos Bandeirantes and different areas of the North and West zones can all work well, depending on your budget, travel style and plans.

For example, Botafogo and Flamengo can be excellent alternatives if you want to stay in the South Zone, have good transport connections and be near several attractions without necessarily paying the prices of the most exclusive areas.

There is no single perfect neighbourhood for everyone. The best place to stay depends on what you want to do during your trip.
