Documents and visa requirements for entering Brazil

Check the official rules for your nationality before booking your trip.

Before you travel

01

National ID card or passport

For tourism, travelers from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay may use an identity document accepted under regional agreements, provided it is valid, in good condition and has an identifiable photo. Travelers of other nationalities should carry a valid passport.

02

Visa

Requirements vary according to nationality and reciprocity. Check the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' General Visa Regime Table.

03

Before heading out

Check that the booking name matches the document, that the document has not been reported lost, and that the airline accepts it for the entire route, especially if there is a stop outside Mercosur.

04

Upon arrival

You may be asked for an onward ticket, your accommodation address and proof of funds appropriate for your stay. Keep your bookings available offline.

05

Customs and luggage

Immigration and customs are different processes. If you carry products, medications, food, alcohol, high-value purchases or quantities that may appear commercial, review Receita Federal rules before traveling and keep receipts when appropriate.

Documents, visas and permitted stay

06

Passport, identity document and visa

The document must be valid, in good condition and accepted under the applicable rules. Regional agreements may allow identity documents for certain nationalities, but airline and connection requirements also matter. Do not rely on an old publication as final confirmation.

07

How to check whether you need a visa

Consult the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ QGRV visa requirements table and the relevant consulate’s instructions. When a visa is required, apply before traveling; its issuance creates an expectation of entry, but the immigration authorities make the final admission decision.

08

eVisa

Availability, eligible nationalities, fees and requirements can change. Use only the link provided by the official consular portal and avoid intermediaries impersonating government websites. Check again before publishing or purchasing.

09

Entry and permitted stay

Carry evidence of accommodation, means of support and onward travel when these may be requested. The permitted stay and possibility of an extension depend on your nationality’s rules. The official service states that extensions are assessed under the QGRV and may require documents and a fee; do not wait until your stay expires.

10

Minors

Check travel authorization, parentage, custody and the requirements of the departure country, Brazil and the airline. A travel guide does not replace consular or legal confirmation in a custody case.

11

CPF

A CPF can help with purchases, tickets and services, but it is neither a visa nor immigration authorization. Do not use someone else’s CPF. To obtain one or resolve a restriction, use Receita Federal’s official channels.

12

Loss or theft

Keep separate copies and consular contacts. If you lose your document, file a police report and contact your consulate for instructions. Do not go to the airport assuming a copy will be enough.

Quick questions

13

FAQ — Do I need a visa to enter Brazil?

It depends on your nationality, document, purpose and date. Check the QGRV and the relevant consulate.

14

FAQ — Can I get a visa on arrival?

When your nationality requires a visa, apply before traveling according to the consular instructions.

15

FAQ — Can I extend my stay?

It depends on the rules that apply to your nationality. Consult the QGRV and request an assessment before your permitted stay expires.

16

FAQ — Does a CPF replace a visa?

No. A CPF is a tax registration and does not grant entry or permission to stay.

Before closing your suitcase

17

Documents, visas and admission are separate checks

Check the rules for your nationality with the consular source and confirm that your document is valid for the entire journey, including stopovers. A visa allows you to request entry but does not guarantee admission. Carry your onward ticket, accommodation address and reservations accessible offline.

18

Permitted stay and extension before expiry

The number of days and possibility of an extension depend on nationality and reciprocity; not everyone automatically receives 90 + 90 days. Check your authorized stay upon entry. If your rules allow an extension, apply to the Federal Police before expiry and confirm current documents, fees and service arrangements.

19

Minors, lost documents and copies

Rules for minors depend on the departure country, residence and accompanying person. Confirm with immigration authorities, the consulate and the airline in advance. Keep encrypted copies and consular details, but do not treat a copy as an automatic substitute for the original. If you lose your document, report the loss and contact your consular representation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What people ask me most before traveling

Is my identity card accepted if it is damaged?

I would not risk it. If it is damaged, illegible, badly worn or the photo no longer clearly identifies you, confirm with the issuing authority and airline before traveling.

Can a driver’s license replace my travel document?

Do not treat it as a substitute for your immigration document. Check which travel documents are explicitly accepted for your nationality.

I have a stopover in another country. Do only Brazil’s rules matter?

No. An international connection may have its own document or transit requirements. Check your entire itinerary, not just Brazil.

Do I need to print my reservations?

Not always, but I would also keep tickets, accommodation details, insurance and important documents offline on my phone.

Can I work in Brazil if I enter as a tourist?

Do not confuse visitor status with general permission to work or establish residence. If your actual purpose is work, study, residence or another specific activity, check the appropriate immigration category.

Do I need to declare cash?

Customs rules and allowances can change. Before traveling, check the e-DBV declaration and Receita Federal’s current guidance.

Do I need a CPF to enter Brazil?

No. A CPF is a tax registration and does not replace a travel document, visa or immigration authorization.

Information reviewed in September 2026. Confirm requirements with immigration authorities, the consulate and the airline before traveling.
