Basílica da Penha stands atop a large rock and is known for its stairs, pilgrimages, religious festivities and North Zone views.
The 382-step staircase, sanctuary and view from the top.
History
Devotion began in the 17th century. Over time, the small hermitage was expanded into one of Rio’s most important Marian sanctuaries.

My tip
You do not have to climb the 382 steps. Check available transport, bring water and avoid the hottest hours. In October it can be very crowded for the patron saint’s feast.
