History
Navigation was fundamental to Brazil's territorial, political and economic development. Expeditions, goods, migrants and invaders arrived by sea. Defending the long coastline required fortifications, arsenals and naval forces.
More context
Museu Naval preserves and presents part of this history. Its exhibition helps explain the role of Marinha do Brasil at different moments in the country's past.
A historic building beside Praça XV
The museum is on Rua Dom Manuel, near Praça XV, Paço Imperial and the ferry terminal. This location connects the exhibition with Rio's former port and administrative area.
More context
For centuries, this part of the city welcomed officials, travelers and ships. The ferry connection with Niterói still keeps Rio's everyday relationship with Guanabara Bay alive.
Ship models, weapons and works of art
Items include ship models, figureheads, paintings, cannons, documents, medals and instruments. The naval models reveal details that would normally be difficult to see on a real ship.
Naval power in the formation of Brazil
The permanent exhibition explains naval power's importance in shaping and defending Brazilian territory. It also covers conflicts, technological change and the evolution of ships used by the navy.
Stories of navigation, defense and exploration
The visit explores major sea voyages, coastal protection, life on board and Brazilian naval involvement in historic events.
A much larger cultural complex
Museu Naval is part of the Marinha cultural circuit. It can be combined with Espaço Cultural da Marinha, Submarino-Museu Riachuelo, Navio-Museu Bauru, Ilha Fiscal and boat trips, although each attraction has different opening hours and tickets.
Why is it worth visiting?
It is free, centrally located and helps explain the sea's importance in Brazilian history. It can also be easily combined with other Praça XV attractions.

My tip
Do not confuse Museu Naval with Espaço Cultural da Marinha: they are different places. Enjoy the free museum, then continue to Paço Imperial, CCBB or Ilha Fiscal.
