Museu do Pontal holds one of Brazil's most important folk art collections. Thousands of works by artists from different regions depict celebrations, work, beliefs, characters, animals, traditions and scenes of everyday Brazilian life.
Folk art, sculptures, Brazilian celebrations, family activities and a collection of over 10,000 pieces.
What you will find
Thousands of folk art sculptures and objects. Works by artists from different regions of Brazil. Pieces by Mestre Vitalino. Depictions of celebrations and traditions. What you may not know
The museum celebrated 50 years in 2026. Its collection exceeds 10,000 pieces. It is considered the largest folk art museum in the country. The historic site suffered from flooding. The new site is near Bosque da Barra. Many activities are free.
History
The museum's origins are linked to French designer and collector Jacques Van de Beuque. After settling in Brazil, he traveled through different regions and began buying works directly from folk artists.
More context
Over decades, it assembled sculptures, figures, ensembles and objects documenting an enormous variety of techniques, materials and traditions. The collection gave visibility to creators often overlooked by established art circles.
From the former Recreio site to a new museum
The historic site operated for years on a large property near Pontal. Access difficulties and flooding led the institution to build a new facility in Barra da Tijuca.
More context
The current site was designed to combine exhibitions, education, gardens and open spaces. Its location near Bosque da Barra lets visitors combine folk art with nature.
Brazil told by its own artists
The works depict religious celebrations, Carnival, bumba meu boi, maracatu, rural work, urban life, animals, legends and characters. Each reflects its creator's region and experience.
Thousands of works from every region of the country
The museum has over 10,000 pieces and continues to expand its collection. Wood, clay, fibers, fabrics, metal and reused materials are transformed into highly creative works.
Mestre Vitalino and leading figures in folk art
The collection includes works by Mestre Vitalino and many artists who transformed community scenes into sculptures and narrative ensembles. Many pieces reveal entire stories through small details.
A museum especially appealing to families
Beyond its exhibitions, Museu do Pontal offers theatrical tours, games, workshops, music and children's activities. Its weekend program can completely transform the experience.
Preservation, research and recognition
The museum documents artists' lives, preserves their work and promotes research into folk art. Its work has expanded recognition of art created outside major academic centers.
Why is it worth visiting?
It is colorful, enjoyable, free and different from traditional museums. The collection offers a highly visual way to understand Brazil's cultural diversity.

My tip
Check the program before setting out: there may be theatrical tours, music and free workshops. As it is far from the South Zone, combine the museum with Bosque da Barra or Cidade das Artes.
