History

The expansion of electricity profoundly transformed Rio de Janeiro. Street lighting, trams, industries, elevators and household appliances changed how people lived and moved around the city.

More context

Light took part in several of these transformations and built an important historical archive. The museum opened in 2012 and was updated in 2022 with new content and experiences.

The former Light building

The museum is at Centro Cultural Light on Avenida Marechal Floriano. The complex preserves part of the business and urban history connected with electricity and public services.

More context

The visit connects scientific experiments with the changes Rio experienced in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Learning about energy through games and experiments

Activities encourage visitors to participate. Demonstrations and experiences cover electricity, magnetism, power generation, safety and responsible use of resources.

Where the electricity we use comes from

The visit explains how energy used in homes and businesses depends on generation, transmission and distribution systems. It also introduces different sources and their environmental impacts.

Photographs of Rio de Janeiro in bygone times

The Light collection preserves urban records of enormous value. Its images show trams, streets, clothing, public works, lighting and the city's transformations.

Education for responsible consumption

One of its main aims is teaching safer, more efficient ways to use electricity. It develops projects for schools, organizations, educators and individual visitors.

Why is it worth visiting?

It is free, interactive and little known among tourists. It is especially interesting for families with children and can be combined with other downtown attractions.

My tip

Do not expect to enter at any time: visits are guided and follow set schedules. Check the schedule first.
