The austere facade conceals one of Brazil’s most impressive Baroque interiors, with carved wooden altars and abundant gilded decoration.
The Baroque interior and Sunday conventual mass with Gregorian chant.
History
The monastery was founded in 1590 by Benedictine monks. The religious community remains active and maintains a daily life of prayer.

My tip
The monastery’s enclosure is not open to tourists: visits are to the church. For Sunday’s Gregorian mass, arrive at least 30 minutes early and maintain absolute silence.
