Niterói’s MAC is one of Brazil’s most recognisable cultural buildings. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, its circular structure seems to float above a base surrounded by a reflecting pool. Contemporary art exhibitions combine with panoramic views of Niterói, Rio and Guanabara Bay.

What you may not know
It opened in 1996. It was designed by Oscar Niemeyer. Its structure seems to float above the ground. The ramp is essential to the experience. It is Niterói’s contemporary symbol. It forms part of Caminho Niemeyer.
History
Museu de Arte Contemporânea opened on 2 September 1996. From its opening, the building’s futuristic shape became one of Niterói’s best-known images.
More context
The institution was created to house contemporary art collections and exhibitions and strengthen the city’s cultural circuit.
Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture
Oscar Niemeyer designed a circular volume raised above a narrow base. A large red outdoor ramp leads gradually to the entrance and lets you view the building from different perspectives.
More context
Niemeyer rejected the idea that the form was merely a flying saucer. His design sought a relationship with the rock, sea, mountains and landscape’s curves.
Contemporary art inside a work of art
The galleries host exhibitions by Brazilian and international artists. Painting, sculpture, photography, installations, video and experimental projects form part of a programme that changes throughout the year.
Coleção João Sattamini
One collection linked to MAC’s history is Coleção João Sattamini, an important body of contemporary Brazilian art.
A panoramic view of the bay
Continuous windows and the outdoor terrace offer views of Sugarloaf Mountain, Corcovado, the bay’s entrance, Niterói’s beaches and Rio.
Part of Caminho Niemeyer
The museum forms part of Oscar Niemeyer’s extensive collection of works in Niterói. It can be combined with other Caminho Niemeyer buildings and the Boa Viagem waterfront.
Why is it worth visiting?
Even for those who do not usually visit exhibitions, the architecture, ramp and views make MAC an essential Niterói visit.

My tip
Do not come just for the galleries. Walk around the whole outdoor area and observe how the building’s shape changes. Combine it with the Boa Viagem waterfront.
