A historic church on a hill overlooking the bay

Photo of Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro

This small white church is a gem of colonial architecture with beautiful views of Glória, Flamengo and Guanabara Bay.

Its octagonal plan, Portuguese tiles and views from Outeiro.

History

It was built in the 18th century and had a special relationship with Brazil’s imperial family. Members of Dom Pedro II’s family were baptised here.

My tip

Go up during the day and pay attention to the interior tiles. The venue is small and may close for weddings, so confirm before travelling.

Opening hours, tickets, programming and visiting conditions may change. Check with the institution before traveling.
