The Metropolitan Cathedral impresses with its enormous conical structure, four coloured stained-glass windows and an interior that accommodates thousands.
The four monumental stained-glass windows rising from the floor to the top of the dome.
History
It opened in 1979 and is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, Rio’s patron saint. It replaced Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé as the cathedral.

My tip
Enter and walk to the centre to appreciate the building’s height. View the four stained-glass windows from different angles and avoid loud conversation during celebrations.
