The former cathedral used by Portugal’s royal family

Antiga Sé is one of the most important churches for understanding Brazil’s royal and imperial periods.

Its direct connection to the Portuguese monarchy and the Empire of Brazil.

History

It was a royal chapel, Rio’s cathedral and the setting for coronations, marriages and ceremonies associated with Dom João VI, Dom Pedro I and Dom Pedro II.

My tip

Look at the interior remembering that fundamental ceremonies in Brazilian history took place here. Do not confuse it with the modern Metropolitan Cathedral.

Opening hours, tickets, programming and visiting conditions may change. Check with the institution before traveling.
