Google Maps mistakes that can waste your time
The shortest route is not always the most practical or appropriate for a visitor.
🚶 Taking the shortest route
It may include stairs, closed access points, trails or unfamiliar areas. Compare the route with main roads and transport options.
📍 Pinning the monument rather than the entrance
Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain, parks, stadiums and long beaches have specific access points. Search for “entrada” (entrance), “bilheteria” (ticket office) or the relevant station.
🏪 Choosing the wrong branch
Restaurants, hospitals and shops may have several branches. Check the neighborhood, street and number before booking your ride.
🕐 Blindly trusting opening hours
Holidays, events, maintenance and last admission times affect opening arrangements. Always confirm through the official channel.
🚌 Not checking the direction of travel
The right station may have entrances on opposite sides. Check the final destination, platform and direction before boarding.
🌧️ Ignoring rain, heat and luggage
A short walk may be a poor choice during a storm, in strong sun or with children or luggage. Reassess based on the actual conditions.
📶 Relying entirely on reception
Download the map, save the written address and take a screenshot of the access point. Internet access may fail on trails and at viewpoints.
🚘 Booking a pickup at any spot
Airports, stadiums and events use designated pickup areas. Walking to another spot may lead to cancellation or make the ride more expensive.
A map shows streets, not always real travel time: traffic, hills, access points and connections can make two nearby places a slow journey apart. I would check the full route and return before booking an activity, especially late in the day. Save the exact address and agree on a clear meeting point; the neighbourhood name alone may not help your driver or group.
