What to see in Lapa

Arches, music, bars and nightlife.

  • Arcos da Lapa
  • Escadaria Selarón
  • Rua do Lavradio

The area's context

Two faces of the same bohemian Rio: Santa Teresa climbs through historic houses and art; Lapa concentrates arches, samba, bars and nightlife.

Along this corridor, I would also consider:

  • Santa Teresa is hilly
  • The tram may have a queue
  • Lapa changes completely between day and night

Ideas for planning the day

  • Classic Santa Teresa: Tram → Largo dos Guimarães → Parque das Ruínas
  • Santa Teresa to Lapa: Ruínas → Selarón → Arcos
  • Planned evening: dinner → samba/show → return by ride app/taxi

Before heading out

  • Do not improvise a nighttime walk back through empty stretches.
  • The hills can be a real issue for visitors with reduced mobility.

Check hours, transport and current conditions; this page does not provide real-time data.

Lapa changes with the time of day

By day: Arcos, Selarón, architecture and connections with Santa Teresa and Cinelândia.

At night: samba, bars, music venues and street activity completely transform the area.

Lavradio: it combines heritage, food and the traditional fair on specific dates; check the calendar before going.

Getting back: at night, I prefer you to know how you will get back before starting your plans.

Plan the neighbourhood around your day

Lapa offers two different outings. By day, you can see the Arcos, Escadaria Selarón and historic streets with a cultural stop; at night, choose your preferred music or atmosphere and a specific venue in advance. Do not turn one evening into a bar checklist: allowing time for dinner, the show and the return usually makes the plan easier.

If you stay nearby, ask about night noise and the room’s orientation before booking. For an evening out, save the venue’s exact address and arrange your return before the night begins; when it ends, use the designated pickup point and avoid improvising a long walk along empty streets. Check the calendar and access details on market or event days.

History and layers of the neighborhood

The Lapa Arches were built in the 18th century as an aqueduct to bring water into the city; later, the Santa Teresa tram used the structure. Lapa has passed through eras of housing, bohemian life, decline, and renewal, becoming a symbol of music and nightlife. The Selarón Staircase added a contemporary public artwork to a setting shaped by colonial and republican layers.

What to notice today

By day, link the Arches with Praça da Cruz Vermelha and historic streets; at night, check event listings, your return transport, and venue operations. Lapa changes greatly with the hour and the event, so the same route can feel very different.
