SOUTH ZONE

Lagoa

Open scenery around the lagoon and connections between several South Zone neighborhoods.

SOUTH ZONE

How I see the neighborhood

Lagoa works both as an outing and as a connector: it changes considerably depending on the stretch, time of day and whether you are walking, cycling or heading to another neighborhood.

COMBINE

For planning your day

It combines well with Jardim Botânico, Ipanema, Leblon and Parque Lage.

How I would fit it into the trip

An area for combining a walk with scenery

One planning detail

Choose a section and a clear meeting point. Weather, events, and path conditions can vary; check what you need and use safe crossings.

SCENERY

The Lagoa changes depending on the stretch

I do not try to circle the whole lagoon just for the sake of it. I choose the stretch based on what I plan to combine: Ipanema, Leblon, Jardim Botânico, Parque Lage or Gávea.

GETTING AROUND

On foot, by bike or as a connection

It is a useful corridor for walking and cycling, but distances can be deceptive. Decide where to start and finish first.

Transport →

A practical way to plan your visit

You do not need to circle the entire lagoon to enjoy Lagoa. Choose where to start and finish based on what you want to combine, and leave time to sit, drink water and cross carefully. If you cycle, decide where your ride begins and ends before setting out; do not treat map pins as if they were next door to one another.

A practical way to plan your visit

For a family outing or an easy-paced visit, agree on a recognisable meeting point and choose a distance that works for the slowest walker. In rain, extreme heat or during an event, shorten the plan or choose another nearby district. Check transport for the final leg: being near the lagoon does not mean every destination is next to a station.

ERNESTINHO · RÍO CON CONTEXTO

History and layers of the neighborhood

The lagoon gave the neighborhood its name and shape, but its landscape was also changed by landfill, roads, and sanitation works. For centuries, its shores were linked to sugar estates and rural properties; modern urbanization turned the edge into a promenade and residential frontage. The name Rodrigo de Freitas recalls one of those former estates: visible nature is intertwined with a history of settlement and transformation.

What to notice today

The waterfront circuit is long: choose a section based on energy, heat, and mobility, and identify crossings and exits first. Pair the shore with an inner street to understand the neighborhood beyond a postcard or a full loop.
