A car can help with luggage, children, multiple beaches or limited mobility; around downtown and on weekends it can add traffic and parking searches. Compare total costs with transfers, buses and local transport.

Before booking
Compare the vehicle you need and get all conditions in writing.
Compare availability and conditions for your dates on Rentcars. This is an affiliate link. Before paying, check the supplier, pickup point and hours, fuel, mileage, insurance, excess, deposit, additional drivers and cancellation.
Count passengers and luggage: seat count does not guarantee space for bags. Check hotel parking and access. A couple downtown may not need a car every day; a family or accommodation with fewer transport links may benefit. Confirm child-seat requirements and installation.
Read terms before handing over a card. Distinguish included cover, optional protection and excess. Ask about exclusions, roadside help and accident procedure. Photograph wheels, windscreen, fuel, mileage and damage at collection; keep the agreement and help number.

During your stay
Drive patiently and do not assume every beach has free parking.
Check one-way streets, limits and current signs; downtown is narrow and may be congested. Do not stop at access points or curves. Confirm hotel parking and vehicle fit. Keep valuables out of sight. Ask about current parking near each beach.
If arriving at Galeão or Santos Dumont, confirm whether pickup is at the airport or off-site and add transfer time and cost. You could travel by transfer or bus and rent locally if you do not need a car for the whole stay. Confirm return point, hours, fees and flight-delay policy.
Buggy rental is related, but has separate rules: licence, age, insurance, deposit, inspection, fuel, helmet and permitted areas. Confirm whether it is self-drive rental or a guided ride; they are different products. See Tours and Experiences for local routes and availability.
In Búzios, a car can make it easier to move between neighbourhoods and beaches, especially when several people share the cost. The choice depends on your accommodation, pace and return time; a car does not make every street easy or remove the need to plan parking.
Consider renting for a family or group, beach equipment, accommodation far from town, multiple beaches in a day or flexible rest stops. Compare total cost per passenger with taxis and local transport. For a short stay focused on the centre and a couple of beaches, the car may sit unused; list your actual trips before choosing rental days.
A car lets you combine Geribá with Ferradura or Tartaruga, return to rest, then dine downtown or see sunset around Manguinhos and Porto da Barra. It can also help plan a day towards Tucuns or Rasa. Do not try to visit every beach in one day; park legally and check conditions before leaving.
Búzios has beach traffic, residential streets, pedestrian crossings, slopes and limited space in some places. The setting differs from Rio’s major roads but still requires care. Plan access and parking, slow down, never use your phone while driving, and do not leave valuables visible.
Do not compare rental with a single ride: add pickup, daily rate, coverage, excess, deposit, fuel, parking and return. Compare it with the group’s real trips. It may pay off when shared and parking is included; short rides may cost less by local transport or taxi.

Before signing: vehicle, cover and return
Read the full terms and photograph existing damage. Do not accept cover you do not understand or assume a credit card covers every incident.
Consider passengers, luggage, child seat, equipment and the route to your accommodation. Confirm space and vehicle class, not just a model photo. Ask about air conditioning, transmission, mileage, spare tyre and roadside assistance. For a narrow or steep approach, check access before choosing a large car.
Ask in writing what cover includes and excludes, the excess, deposit hold and release timing. Check glass, tyres, underbody, keys and additional drivers. Ask about fuel, accidents, theft and roadside assistance. Photograph the car and record fuel and mileage at pickup and return.
Confirm branch address, hours, ID, age, card and one-way return rules. If collecting in Cabo Frio, include the trip to Búzios. At the beach, keep purchases out of sight and take documents with you. Return well before your flight; save booking and roadside-assistance details offline.
A buggy is not just a small rental car: it may be a guided ride or a day rental with separate rules. Ask who drives, licence and age requirements, helmet, cover, permitted route, fuel, return time, deposit, passengers and cancellation. Do not drive on sand or anywhere prohibited. The buggy offer belongs under Tours and Experiences; check current availability and conditions there before paying.
