Accessibility in Búzios: check every part of the journey

Accessibility varies by street and with tides, construction, weather and daily operations. Do not assume a beach, hotel or vehicle is accessible from a photo; request measurements and confirm for your dates.

01

Before booking

Describe your needs and ask about real conditions, not just labels.

01

Accommodation: room and route

Ask about steps from the street to reception and the room; request recent photos. Confirm door widths, turning space, bed height, shower, grab bars, seat, bathroom and flooring. Check whether restaurant and pool are accessible too, and keep written confirmation.

02

Transport and the final leg

Ask about a ramp, lift, securement and room for your chair alongside luggage. Confirm pickup surface, boarding help, return and total cost. Shared transfers may have steps and fixed schedules; confirm the actual vehicle model.

02

Praia da Azeda and access to the sea

Búzios has inclusive initiatives, but a photograph does not guarantee independent access every day. Check the approach, ramp, sand, amphibious chair, staff and return journey.

03

01 · Praia da Azeda: a ramp is not the entire route

A ramp helping visitors reach Praia da Azeda was reported in May 2025. Before travelling, confirm its current condition, gradients, sandy sections and available assistance. This does not guarantee full independent access.

04

02 · Assisted sea bathing

Assisted bathing depends on tides, surf, equipment and trained staff. A previous event does not guarantee daily availability. Confirm your exact date.

03 · Mar para Todos: the municipal initiative

Mar para Todos is run by the Búzios municipality through its disability affairs department. Activities with amphibious chairs and trained support were reported at Azeda in May and August 2025. An August report also mentioned Forno and the left side of Geribá. The phone published then was +55 22 2350-6066; verify current contact details, dates and eligibility.

06

04 · What is an amphibious chair?

An amphibious chair can help with movement over sand and assisted water entry. It is not an ordinary wheelchair and should not be assumed to work without support. Ask about transfers, safety procedures and suitability.

03

Beaches, streets and facilities

Check the route from transport to where you will spend time.

07

Beach access: ask specific questions

Sand, slopes and surf change. Ask whether there is a boardwalk on your date, how far it reaches, whether it gets close to the water, and whether amphibious chairs, booking, help and toilets are available. A temporary program does not guarantee a permanent service.

08

Streets, pavements and breaks

The terrain includes hills, narrow pavements, cobbles, sand and unpaved sections. Ask for a specific route and check ramps, crossings and shade. Plan the return and an alternative transport option.

09

Restaurants, toilets and care

Before going out, ask about steps, customer toilets, table spacing and vehicle access. Arrange medication refrigeration or equipment charging separately with the accommodation and restaurant.

04

Describe your needs and check the whole route

“Accessible” means different things to different people. A step-free room does not solve a sandy street; a beach ramp does not guarantee an accessible toilet, and an adapted vehicle may not fit your chair. Ask specific questions about each leg.

10

Start with needs, not a label

List what you need for mobility, rest, bathing, communication, orientation and emergency evacuation. Describe your equipment and the obstacle that matters, without sharing unnecessary medical details. This invites a verifiable answer instead of a vague “yes, accessible”.

11

Ask for measurements, photos and human support

Ask for clear door and corridor widths, transfer space, grab bars, shower and thresholds. Request a video from pavement to bed and bathroom; promotional photos may hide obstacles. Confirm lift, assistance, parking and pickup in writing and again shortly before arrival.

12

Plan energy, breaks and a backup

With hills and sand, a short distance can take time and energy. Check surfaces, slopes, crossings, shade, breaks, toilets and the return. Have confirmed backup transport and verify it can carry your equipment.

13

Airport transport and luggage

When booking a transfer, describe your equipment and confirm the vehicle, entry, space and weight limit. Confirm passenger and luggage capacity, pickup point and address. Ask the intercity bus operator directly about boarding, wheelchair space and assistance deadlines before buying.

05

Beaches, outings, restaurants and communication

Access varies by beach and with sand, tide, wind and season. Confirm the specific service for your date and activity; a ramp photo does not prove it is installed, reaches the water or has staff.

14

Beach access and the Mar para Todos programme

In April 2025, Búzios City Hall said the Mar para Todos project would hold monthly sessions at Geribá, Ferradura and Forno beaches, with other dates requestable at least three days ahead via WhatsApp at (22) 2350-6066. That notice does not confirm the 2026 schedule: contact the municipality before travelling to confirm beach, time, equipment, registration, assistance, toilets and sea conditions. A monthly event notice does not guarantee daily amphibious chairs or staff at every beach.

15

Sensory, vision and hearing access

If noise or crowds affect you, ask for a quiet room and calmer times. For low vision, request route details, lighting and accessible menus; do not assume continuous tactile paving. If deaf or hard of hearing, request written notices and messaging.

16

Companions, assistance dogs and service

State whether a companion is travelling and confirm assistance-dog rules and documents. Record needs in the booking. Staff should ask before moving a chair or touching equipment. Phrases: “Por favor, pergunte antes de me ajudar” and “Preciso das informações por escrito”.

17

Message template for accommodation or provider

Send: “I will be in Búzios from [date] to [date] and need [specific need]. Could you send a video from the street to the room and bathroom, with door, step and shower measurements? Can you confirm [wheelchair space / toilet / assistance dog / boarding support] for this unit and date? Who should I contact if something changes?” For a tour, ask about vehicle, boarding, toilets and cancellation. Specific written answers help you compare.
