What this experience is like
I’ll take you to a landscape of mountains, sea and wild beaches. We hike through the Atlantic Forest in Barra de Guaratiba to the rock made famous by its optical-illusion photo, but the scenery deserves much more than a pose.
✓ Uphill hike: approximately 45–60 minutes
✓ Moderate difficulty, with slopes and uneven ground
✓ Views of Barra de Guaratiba and Restinga da Marambaia
✓ An early start is recommended to avoid heat and queues
01 · Heading to a different side of Rio
We leave the bustle of Copacabana behind and head to Barra de Guaratiba, where the city gives way to coastal villages, green slopes and less urban beaches. From the trailhead, we follow a natural path with stretches of dirt, vegetation and uphill climbs. I recommend sturdy shoes with good grip, water and a comfortable pace. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be able to walk uphill.
The trail and its views deserve to be remembered too.

02 · The lookout that took social media by storm
From the top, the western coast of Rio, Barra de Guaratiba, Restinga da Marambaia and the Atlantic come into view. The famous photo relies on a camera angle that hides the ground beneath the rock, making it look as though you’re suspended over a drop. Never hang over the edge or take risks for the shot. Poses must follow the guide’s directions and suit the conditions.
Rio’s best-known hiking photo illusion.

03 · Much more than a photograph
We can take seated portraits on the rock, with mountains in the background or facing the sea. On busy days, there may be a queue for the classic photo. That’s why I prefer a morning start: the light can be better for pictures and the climb is usually more pleasant, though it won’t guarantee shorter waits. We then return through the same natural landscape.
Each angle tells a different part of the story.

04 · A day to remember
Some agencies combine the hike with stops at Prainha, Grumari or Recreio. These stops are not automatically included; they must be confirmed based on the operator, the booked duration and the day’s conditions. Before booking, we can ask about extra photography, a private option or pickup at your accommodation.
The West Zone coastline completes the view.
