What this experience is like
This is no casual walk. Climbing Pedra da Gávea is a demanding mountaineering experience, with a steep elevation gain, exposed rock and a technical section. The reward is one of Rio’s most striking views, but safety comes first.
✓ Strenuous hike; operators advertise outings of around 6–8 hours
✓ Traditional route starting on Estrada Sorimã in Barrinha
✓ Technical scrambling section known as Carrasqueira
✓ A specialist guide and assessment of conditions are essential
01 · The mountain that towers over Rio
At more than 800 metres tall, Pedra da Gávea is one of Rio’s most recognizable granite formations. The traditional ascent starts in Barrinha, along Estrada Sorimã, gaining elevation through forest, roots, rock and long slopes. The humidity and terrain shift along the way. You need good fitness, a clear head and enough time for both the ascent and descent.
The forest is part of both the challenge and the beauty of the climb.

02 · Carrasqueira: where the technical section begins
Carrasqueira is an exposed scrambling section on sloping rock. Tijuca National Park warns of serious accidents on this route. I don’t recommend attempting the climb without a specialist operator who can assess trail conditions, participants’ experience and the necessary safety equipment. Confirm in advance whether ropes, a helmet or other gear will be used.
On the rock, caution is part of the experience.

03 · The summit is rewarding, and the return matters too
If conditions allow you to complete the climb, the summit offers wide views of Barra da Tijuca, São Conrado, the Atlantic and the park. The descent can be as demanding as the ascent, so you need to conserve energy and daylight. If it rains or the group isn’t safe to continue, the guide may turn back before the summit. Reaching the top is never more important than returning safely.
The views reward the effort, but the mountain deserves respect.
