Pedra Bonita

A modest effort for an immense view

What this experience is like

Pedra Bonita is one of my top recommendations for discovering Rio’s forest, mountains and coastline on a single hike. From the summit, you get extraordinary views of São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca and imposing Pedra da Gávea.

✓ A relatively short, accessible trail for active walkers
✓ Tijuca National Park · access via Estrada das Canoas
✓ Views of São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca and Pedra da Gávea
✓ The hike does not include a paraglider or hang-glider flight

01 · Into the Atlantic Forest

The experience begins in the Pedra Bonita/Pedra da Gávea sector of Tijuca National Park. From Estrada das Canoas, we trade the city noise for Atlantic Forest. The trail passes over natural ground, roots, shaded stretches and gentle to moderate slopes. The park estimates about 20 minutes on foot to the summit, though breaks and photos can make it take much longer. It’s an excellent introduction to Rio’s trails.

The park’s vegetation is with you for almost the whole climb.

02 · São Conrado’s natural balcony

The sheer expanse of rock and the wide horizon are striking. Pedra da Gávea rises on one side; on the other lie São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca, the mountains and the ocean. On clear days, you can make out different stretches of coastline; in the mist, the landscape feels mysterious. Take time to look around and photograph the view from several safe spots.

Pedra da Gávea dominates the view from the summit.

03 · Lookouts and free flight are separate activities

The same area is home to a famous launch ramp for hang gliders and paragliders when weather and operations permit. Watching them is a spectacle, but it isn’t guaranteed. The Pedra Bonita hike does not include a flight; these are separate experiences with their own bookings, insurance and prices. If you’re interested, you can also ask me about free flight.

The view changes between the launch ramp and the trail.

04 · The trail is worth photographing too

There’s more to the hike than reaching the top. You’ll see huge leaves, rocks, glimpses through the trees and hear birdsong. Wildlife sometimes appears; we must not touch or feed the animals. The hike is scheduled within the park’s permitted hours and follows its conservation rules.

Some of the best photos may be along the way.

05 · The photos I like best

On the rock, you can take portraits with Gávea in the background, beach panoramas and group photos framed by the mountains. Try a few angles, and ask someone else to take a full group shot. A professional photo session is an extra service and must be specifically confirmed.

A different view in every photo.

Ernestinho’s tip

Bring water and shoes with good grip. Mist and clouds can roll in quickly, so no view is guaranteed, but the forest is always worth the hike.

What can you pair this experience with?

At another time, you could pair this visit with São Conrado or Joatinga beaches, or with a free-flight experience.
